Position description

Selleri Lab - Junior Specialist

Orofacial Sciences

UC San Francisco

Under direct supervision of lab personnel, the Junior Specialist is assigned to assist in research activities in the lab focused on developmental biology, organogenesis, and mouse models of birth defects. The primary task will be to perform genotyping of mouse colonies and molecular cloning. Incumbent will verify results through molecular assays (PCR, qPCR, protein assay) and cell culture. Incumbent will assist in maintaining genetic modified mouse lines / colonies as well as common lab duties. This is a part-time position.

Key Responsibilities include the following skills:



  • Molecular Cloning
  • DNA and RNA extraction and purification.
  • PCR and qPCR
  • Western blotting, ELISA
  • Assist in maintenance of mouse colonies
  • Small animal handling, euthanasia, dissection, and organ harvesting
  • Preparation and sectioning of frozen and paraffin-embedded tissues
  • Chromogen and fluorescent immunohistochemistry and special histological stains
  • Maintenance of mammalian cell culture and tissue culture
  • Isolation of primary cells


Required Qualifications:



  • Specialists appointed at the Junior rank must possess a baccalaureate degree (or equivalent degree) or at least four years of research experience.


Preferred Qualifications:



  • Able and willing to assist lab members in their projects.
  • Ability to learn new methods/techniques and apply them as needed.
  • Ability to understand complex directions and protocols. Must also be willing to ask for assistance or further guidance when need arises.
  • Strong computer skills using software programs such as MS Office. Candidate will need to manipulate spreadsheets and record data in various form.
  • Computer skills using specialized software and programs for molecular cloning, e.g., Geneious and SnapGene.
  • Ability to quickly perform mathematical calculations needed to make dilutions of stock chemical solutions.
  • Possesses the attention to detail that is required to perform the daily procedures and lab activities.
  • Excellent organizational skills and ability to display those talents in difficult situations.
  • Ability to work with other labs and services to complete assigned tasks.


See Table 24B for the salary range for this position. A reasonable estimate for this position is $53,100-$56,600.
