Responsibilities

Peraton is in need of an accomplished underwater acoustics, machine learning, and mathematics researcher to contribute to ongoing Navy Research Laboratory (NRL) research and development of operational tools for Navy use. This project consists of the design, analysis, and implementation of algorithms for the numerical solution of the Navy Standard Parabolic Equation (NSPE) for modeling underwater acoustic pressure that are more efficient than the approach employed by the NSPE software suite that is currently in use, without loss of accuracy.

This endeavor involves experimentation with state-of-the-art techniques for

The numerical solution of partial differential equations, including but not limited to Galerkin methods and spectral methods, and
  • Various problems from numerical linear algebra, including direct and/or iterative methods for solutions of linear systems, eigenvalue problems, and approximation of matrix functions via rational Krylov projection and related approaches.
  • NSPE is implemented in FORTRAN, but proposed algorithms are prototyped in MATLAB. Therefore, the successful candidate will be an expert in both FORTRAN and MATLAB and adept at porting applications from MATLAB into FORTRAN.
  • The research will involve extensive use of artificial neural networks, particularly convolutional recurrent autoencoder networks, to optimize computation.
  • This project requires substantial research experience and expertise, including broad foundational research knowledge, familiarity with cutting-edge research, and familiarity with NRL's research process in view of developing next-generation technology tools for Navy.
  • A strong background in both numerical analysis and machine learning is essential. A strong understanding of the theory behind mathematical modeling of sound waves and application of that theory to develop practical application is required.

Qualifications

Required Qualifications:

  • 5 years experience with a PhD
  • 5 years experience programming in FORTRAN and MATLAB
  • 2 years experience working with Navy Standard Parabolic Equation (NSPE) model
  • 5 years experience in numerical modeling of partial differential equations
  • Familiarity with machine learning techniques
  • Ability to obtain a Secret Clearance
