Primary Purpose of Organizational Unit |
Building Services provide full maintenance and repair services for all
UNC facilities and ensure the proper operation of those facilities in support of the
UNC mission of teaching, research and public service. Building Services supports more than 400 campus buildings with approximately 18 million gross square feet of space. The teams that provide quality maintenance, repair and construction services that support the teaching, research, and public service mission of the University include Campus Maintenance,
EMCS, Facilities Operations Support, Housing Support,
HVAC Systems, and Life Safety Services. Campus Maintenance operates, maintains and improves the physical environment of the University through a complete line of shop services that include carpentry, electrical, plumbing, masonry, insulation, preventive maintenance and special laboratory equipment repair. |
Position Summary |
A SIGN-ON BONUS OF $4,668 IS AVAILABLE FOR THE SUCCESSFUL APPLICANT OF THIS POSITION PAID IN 2 INSTALLMENTS WITHIN 12 MONTHS OF HIRE: $2,334 WITHIN 30 DAYS OF HIRE DATE & $2,334 12 MONTHS AFTER HIRE DATE.
This position is responsible for performing electrical tasks and duties, including troubleshooting and repair of lighting systems and associated components, and building electrical systems at the 120/208 volt and 277/480 volt range; troubleshoots and repairs electrical switch gear and distribution panels; safely uses and operates powered and/or manual hand tools of the electrical trade; and provides general maintenance, repair, replacement, fabrication, installation and alteration services. |
Minimum Education and Experience Requirements |
High school diploma or equivalency; or demonstrated possession of the competencies necessary to perform the work. Some positions may require special licenses or certification. Optional Guidelines: experience in the trade(s) areas related to the area of assignment may be substituted on a year-for-year basis. |
Required Qualifications, Competencies, and Experience |
Demonstrated working knowledge of the methods, practices, tools, and materials used in electrical maintenance and repair; demonstrated competencies in maintenance, repair, replacement, and installation of facility components; ability to plan, problem-solve and work safely. Ability to serve as a mandatory employee who is required to report to work in support of mandatory University operations, even when adverse weather or other emergency conditions require the University to close. Valid North Carolina Driver's License or ability to obtain one prior to start date. |
Preferred Qualifications, Competencies, and Experience |
Ability to read and interpret complex electrical schematics and blueprints; experience in
NFPA 70E requirements as well as the National Electrical Code; and three years of demonstrated journey level experience in electrical maintenance or construction. |

Ability to stand for extended periods of time; navigate stairs; climb ladders; work in small, tight spaces; bend, stoop, crawl and squat; work from ladders, lifts and scaffolding; move objects weighing in excess of 50 lbs with or without reasonable accommodation; and wear required Personal Protective Equipment (
PPE) for the specific job, including but not limited to safety harnesses, fall protection, respirators, face masks or face shields, safety glasses, safety shoes and protective gloves. |

**ELIGIBILITY FOR SIGN-ON BONUS
The selected candidate for this position may be eligible for a sign-on bonus. Qualified applicants must apply and be selected from the candidate pool of this posting and meet the State policy following requirements:
To be eligible for a Sign-on bonus, an individual must not have worked in a probationary, permanent, or time-limited appointment in the last 12 months as an employee in North Carolina state government, including but not limited to the judicial system, state executive branch agencies, and the university system in a position subject to the State Human Resources Act.
A newly hired permanent full time or permanent part-time (more than 20 hours a week) employee are eligible for a sign-on bonus (this will be prorated for employees working more than 20 hours and less than 40 hours per week).
