Job Summary

The Staff Research Associate II (SRA II) assists the principal investigator (PI) with active experiments and will aid in the administrative responsibilities related to the operation of a biomedical research laboratory. This is a great opportunity for individuals interested in graduate school in the biomedical sciences or medical school.
Our laboratory is interested in cardiovascular sequelae of novel cancer therapies. We are currently generating and characterizing pre-clinical mouse models that recapitulate the cardiovascular toxicities associated with novel cancer immunotherapies like immune checkpoint inhibitor myocarditis and using these models to elucidate underlying cardiovascular and immunological biology. In parallel, these scientific observations are coupled with a robust clinical surveillance program. The incumbent will aid in experimental support for these projects. In addition, the incumbent will have administrative responsibilities to aid in the daily operations of the growing lab.

The SRA II will have many duties relevant to these goals and it is expected that they will become increasing independent over time. It is expected that the SRA II will become well-versed in multiple molecular and biochemical techniques to analyze tissues and cells, such as western blotting, qPCR. They will also assist with various mouse model experiments and take an active role in mouse colony maintenance. The SRA II will also supervise lab supply maintenance and ordering.

The final salary and offer components are subject to additional approvals based on UC policy.

Your placement within the salary range is dependent on a number of factors including your work experience and internal equity within this position classification at UCSF. For positions that are represented by a labor union, placement within the salary range will be guided by the rules in the collective bargaining agreement.

The salary range for this position is $28.04 - $45.09 (Hourly Rate).

Department Description

The Division of Cardiology is one of the largest clinical, research and training divisions of the Department of Medicine (DOM) at UCSF. The Division has developed a well-established Cardiology Clinical Research Unit (CCRU) which supports 60-70 active clinical trials. The CCRU research portfolio covers phase I- IV and post approval trial types and covers a diversity of trials ranging from pharmaceutical, device, preventative, and social behavioral research. Within the Division are sub-specialty sections for: Adult Congenital Heart Disease; Advanced Heart Failure, Transplant, and Pulmonary Hypertension; Cardiac Electrophysiology; Critical Care Cardiology; Cardio-Oncology and Immunology; Echocardiography and Cardiac Imaging; General Cardiology, Interventional Cardiology; and Prevention. The Division runs several clinical practices in multiple sites, conducts basic and clinical research, and educates medical students, residents, clinical fellows through ACGME as well as non-ACGME training programs. In addition, the Division has significant and complex financial and administrative relationships with the Department of Medicine (DOM) and the UCSF Medical Center, as well as large patient care programs in the sections noted above, large clinical, Federal, and privately supported research programs and six faculty laboratories.

The Division has 80 full-time faculty, several non-faculty academics, 36 clinical fellows, several post-doctoral research fellows, and approximately 60 research support and administrative staff. The Division currently expends over $22 million per year in pursuit of its clinical, research, training, and service missions. While the Division is primarily split between the Parnassus and Mission Bay campuses, clinical fellows have rotations at the Zuckerberg San Francisco General Hospital and the San Francisco Veterans Affairs Medical Center.

Required Qualifications

• BA/BS in a related science (background in general biology, molecular biology, cell biology, genetics, and chemistry) and one or more years of recent, directly related work experience, utilizing the techniques or methods required by the position; and/or equivalent experience/training.
• Experience with mouse colony maintenance and mouse breeding
• Experience with basic molecular cloning and biochemistry
• Experience with basic cell culture techniques
• Experience accurately and successfully performing DNA and protein gel electrophoresis; western blotting; PCR; quantitative RT-PCR; standard cell culture; and DNA/RNA extractions from animal tissues and cell culture samples
• Demonstrated knowledge of molarity, sterile technique, standard Mendelian genetic inheritance, and general microbiology
• Demonstrated ability to perform standard data analysis
• Demonstrated ability to multi-task

Preferred Qualifications

• BA/BS degree in a field relevant to biomedical research (e.g., biology, chemistry, molecular biology, pre-medicine track)
• Experience with rodent handling and experiments
• Previous basic science research experience
• Previous experience with lab management
