EIPA Rater - Part-Time

Evaluates the expressive and receptive sign language proficiency of educational interpreters. Works in a 2-3 person team in a virtual online meeting room during the evaluation process. Attends weekly online training lasting approximately one year. Rates on a regular basis in order to maintain calibrations standards for producing quality assessment scoring and feedback. SCHEDULE: Part-time, 20 hours/month MAJOR RESPONSIBILITIES & DUTIES
  • Conducts diagnostic rating services according to standards.
  • Completes an extensive weekly training regimen consisting of mandatory training sessions with the rater reliability coach and self-directed training assignments.
  • Assists with diagnostic reports for EIPA.
  • Continues professional development in the field of ASL linguistics and educational interpreter practices.
  • Responds to interpreter and Local Test Administrator questions and concerns.
  • Attends mandatory rater reliability meetings.
  • Communicates regularly and consistently with the Rating Coach or other administrators to meet rating scheduling availability deadlines as well as absences, in advance.
  • Maintains a confidential, private work environment without distractions to ensure the focus required for valid team rating.
  • Contributes to a professional environment during rating sessions by staying focused on the rating work to ensure validity and completion of testing within the allotted time.
  • Performs other duties and attends designated meetings as assigned, which may include, but not limited to supporting workshops and/or supporting the development of distance educational materials and complying with researcher validity testing requests, etc.
KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, AND ABILITIES
  • Ability to use American Sign Language at an advanced level of proficiency.
  • Knowledge of ASL linguistics (i.e., phonology, morphology, syntax, semantics, iconicity)
  • Understand language variations in terms of their cultural contexts and translation between ASL and English
  • Apply linguistic science to compare, identify parts and relationships of a signed message and spoken English (hearing evaluators only)
  • Demonstrate skills and techniques for analysis and transfer of message meanings to render effective translations and interpretations, whether consecutively or simultaneously
  • Ability to critically judge and assess the skills and techniques for effective translations and interpretations.
  • Ability to analyze and apply knowledge of discourse settings and structures.
  • Knowledge of computer technology and virtual meeting platforms
  • Ability to assess voice-to-sign or sign-to-voice performances as appropriate in teams of 2-3 raters
  • Ability to work well as an active, contributing team member of a department and the EIPA team, as well as ability to work independently and demonstrate initiative.
  • Ability to collaborate with the rating team during the evaluation process, and communicate observations, and discuss team members evaluation differences.
REQUIRED QUALIFICATIONS
  • Bachelor's degree in interpreting, deaf education, linguistics, or related field or equivalent combination of education and experience required.
  • Minimum of 1 year experience interpreting or working with interpreters required.
  • Accesses to a computer, webcam, and a private high speed internet connection required.
  • Boys Town's Enterprise Management app (ex: Workday) to be installed on mobile phone to record hours worked required.
PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS
  • Master's degree strongly preferred.
  • Certified Interpreter (RID, CID, etc.) preferred.
  • ASL Instructor preferred.
