DESCRIPTION

The Department of Ophthalmology is comprised of 30 faculty physicians and scientists, 10 resident physicians, and 13 (include clinical and research) post-doctoral physicians and scientists and over 150 staff with 6 divisions - Glaucoma, Retina, Cornea & Refractive Surgery, Pediatrics, Ocularplastics, and Neuro-ophthalmology. Clinical services are provided at the Shiley Eye Center, Ratner Eye Center, Perlman Oculoplastics, Hillcrest Eye Center. The Department of Ophthalmology has the largest single outpatient clinic at the University of California, San Diego with over 110,000 visits annually. Additionally, over 5400 surgical cases are performed.

The Department of Ophthalmology is rapidly growing and looking to expand its practice at the Shiley Eye Center and in regional satellites, including possible acquisition of existing practices.

Functions within the activities of all medically related paraprofessionals and office activities involving patient flow and care. Back-up for other supervisors as needed in their absence and as requested by the Director of Ophthalmology Services.

Under the supervision of physician will participate in patient care including history, diagnostic vision tests and visual field examinations. Performs non-repetitive and specialized tasks involving established methodologies used in ophthalmic patient care requiring high level of skill. Responsible for maintaining timely and courteous patient flow. In addition, organize and oversee stocking of each lane and maintenance of equipment in each lane. Teaches and trains technicians and staff as required on new equipment and procedures. Communicates with providers, supervisors and Director on quality and improvement initiatives.

Supervises clinic operations staff involved in routine functions. Oversight of administrative areas such as registration, new patient coordination, scheduling, medical records storage and maintenance, facilities, insuranceauthorizations, and clinical support staff such as medical assistants.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS
  • Seven years of related experience, education/training, OR a Bachelor's degree in related area plus three years of related experience/training.

  • Skills to supervise support staff in clinic / center administration, and to effectively manage multiple priorities in a fast-paced, dynamic environment.

  • Knowledge of practice operations, patient-scheduling systems, medical and insurance terminology, applicable information systems, patient service standards, and regulatory requirements.

  • Basic knowledge of human resources management policies, with the ability to train, monitor, evaluate, and document human resources issues and performance, and to provide input to decision-making on human resources matters.

  • Detail oriented, with the ability to apply analytical and critical thinking skills to quickly analyze problems, determine appropriate level of intervention, and apply effective solutions.

  • Solid interpersonal skills for effective information exchange and problem solving with all levels of management and staff, consultants, and outside agencies.

  • Skills in written and verbal communications, with the ability to convey complex administrative, clinical, and technical information in a clear and concise manner, and to produce a variety of reports and analyses.

  • Knowledge of business software and specialized applications and data management systems used in clinic / center operations.

  • Experience in performing ultrasound A-scan, B-scan and biomicroscopy for detection of tumors, retinal detachments, iris tumors and other pathological problems.

  • Knowledge of infection control principles

  • Ability to perform tonometry, field of vision, visual acuity, manifest refractions, color vision, spectacle measurement near point accomodation and convergence and related tests.

  • Ability to take patient history, document patient concerns and provide complete documentation as necessary for technician role in EPIC patient encounter.

PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS
  • Experience in Glaucoma specialty.

Pay Transparency Act

Annual Full Pay Range: $69,500 - $123,500 (will be prorated if the appointment percentage is less than 100%)

Hourly Equivalent: $33.29 - $59.15

Factors in determining the appropriate compensation for a role include experience, skills, knowledge, abilities, education, licensure and certifications, and other business and organizational needs. The Hiring Pay Scale referenced in the job posting is the budgeted salary or hourly range that the University reasonably expects to pay for this position. The Annual Full Pay Range may be broader than what the University anticipates to pay for this position, based on internal equity, budget, and collective bargaining agreements (when applicable).
