Fairfax County's award-winning Stormwater team works to reduce flood risk and protect local watersheds and the Chesapeake Bay with comprehensive watershed and infrastructure management to protect people, the environment, and property.

Assigns work to crews and individuals on a daily basis and dispatch crews accordingly. Ensure necessary utility clearances and vehicle checks have been completed. Participates with crews during construction and evaluate completed assignments to ensure quality of work performed and expended resources correspond to the intended scope of work. Makes corrections with team leader as necessary. Assists subordinates in analyzing and executing, in a safe manner, complex repair and rehabilitation projects that enhance the county's infrastructure. Evaluates, recommends, and implements strategies that improve overall service delivery.to the community based on crew performance data. Acts on behalf of environmental services supervisors in their absence dispatching and managing larger agency work groups as needed. Inspects sites to determine maintenance requirements and scopes of work that comply with agency program services levels, engineering standards, and construction practices. Oversees and assists with infrastructure field survey for needed maintenance work orders. Investigate routine citizen complaints. Writes work orders for needed corrective action by county forces or contracted services as appropriate. Researches property ownership, maintains accurate records such as time and attendance, daily crew assignments, accident reports, damage claims, citizen complaints, maintenance schedules, crew productivity, purchasing and material usage, and work order close out, and work order management indicators. Complies with county work guidelines and policies for work crews. Promotes and ensures safety compliance with safety regulations such as VOSHA, OSHA, Underground Protection Act and confined space entry, personal protective equipment and operation of vehicles and equipment. Brings any unsafe working conditions to the immediate attention of employees. Participates in regular safety meetings. On call 24 hours for snow emergencies, flooding, and other disasters. Supervises snow removal and flood response operations, set priorities and schedules, and performs quality assurance/quality control inspections in the field in accordance with agency emergency response plans. Assumes other duties and responsibilities.as assigned maintain a valid class "B" commercial driver's license. Ability to obtain Tanker Endorsement within 12 months of employment. Ability to obtain and maintain Responsible Land Disturber Certificate. Position requires incumbent to operate a motor vehicle to drive to/from construction sites, offsite meetings, training and/or conferences.

Note: The appointee to this position is subject to emergency callback 24 hours a day/seven days a week (24/7) to respond to snow, flood, and other emergencies requiring division resources. Promotes the mission, vision, and values of a unified Department of Public Works and Environmental Services in addition to divisional needs.

* A $2,500 signing bonus is available to new county employees hired in a Senior Maintenance Supervisor position that requires a CDL. Applicants must possess a valid CDL at time of application submission to be eligible.

Employment Standards

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:
Any combination of education, training, and experience equivalent to the following: high school diploma or GED issued by a state department of education, and four years of increasingly responsible experience related to the maintenance of municipal facilities and infrastructure from either a public or private organization.

CERTIFICATES AND LICENSES REQUIRED:

  • Valid driver's license.
  • Commercial driver's license (CDL) Class "B".
    • Tanker Endorsement within 12 months of hire.

NECESSARY SPECIAL REQUIREMENTS:
The appointee to this position will be required to complete a criminal background check, a pre-employment physical examination, driving record check, and commercial driver's license screening to the satisfaction of the employer.

PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS:
  • The ideal candidate possesses knowledge of hydrology and hydraulics used in storm drainage, stormwater management and flood control facilities.
  • General knowledge of the use of construction and snow removal equipment.
  • General Knowledge in specialized trades including welding, carpentry, small engine repair, and equipment maintenance.
  • Two years supervisory experience with maintenance and trades workers.
  • Two years leading or managing operations.

PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS:
Ability to pass pre-employment physicals. With or without reasonable accommodation performs duties to include pushing, pulling, lifting, bending, stooping, walking, climbing in and out of catch basins and manholes (with assistance, includes removal and replacement of manhole covers weighing up to 90 lbs.) Candidate must be physically and mentally capable of performing confined space entry operations via 21" manholes with vertical descent using integral or portable ladders further requiring use of all applicable protective equipment and documentation. Physical and mental ability to use all applicable personal protective equipment in an outdoor environment to include hardhat, eye protection, hearing protection, safety footwear, long pants, sleeved shirt, and personal fall arrest harness, emergency retrieval systems, and atmospheric monitoring equipment. All duties performed with or without reasonable accommodations.

SELECTION PROCEDURE:
Panel interview and may include exercise.

BONUS ELIGIBILITY:
Positions within this classification that require a CDL that are general merit may be eligible for a one-time hiring incentive bonus for new county employees only. This bonus program requires a signed payback agreement between the department and employee. Must have CDL at time of hire.
