General Purpose Develop and manage an innovative Chaplaincy Program, assuring that there is Spiritual Services coverage all nights, weekends, and holidays; manage the volunteer program; perform other management duties as assigned by the Director Labor & Caregiver Relations; provide spiritual care to patients, families, team members, and volunteers. Essential Duties
- Assists in developing and take the lead in demonstrating and communicating the shared mission, vision, and values for the UMH Sparrow and the Spiritual Services Department, motivating others to achieve operational goals and objectives.
- Serve on planning and decision-making committees of the UMH Sparrow to which he/she is appointed or on which co-workers invite her/him to serve.
- Recruits, interviews, hires, orients, mentors, trains, and manages the Spiritual Services Department On-Call Chaplaincy team members, providing monthly continuing education and conducting team member evaluations once a year. In addition, communicates regularly with Payroll to assure that they are paid correctly and timely.
- Manages the department on-call calendar.
- Recruits, interviews, orients, and manages all department volunteers.
- In collaboration with your Leader, plans, organizes, directs, and evaluates the functions/services of the department.
- Assumes responsibility for managing the day to day operations of the department.
- Initiates pastoral care visits to patients/families, with priority being given to referrals, critical care, and long-term patients.
- Coordinates and/or provides worship, ritual, and sacramental experiences for staff and patients, and serves as invocator for hospital and community events.
- Helps interpret and evaluate ethical and moral situations in health care delivery to ensure the dignity and rights of the patient. May serve on the UMH Sparrow Ethics Committee
- Serves as a role model for consistent demonstration of UMH Sparrow's Customer Service Behavioral Standards of Performance, by respecting the Privacy and Confidentiality of those we serve.
- As needed (approximately 25% of time), providing for the spiritual and emotional needs of patients, visitors, and staff with the framework of a professional and progressive model of chaplaincy.
- Provides annual performance evaluations of all staff.
- Debriefs spiritual care cases with chaplains and responds administratively to associate concerns, consulting with the Director Labor & Caregiver Relations as needed.
- Provides for staff meetings as needed within the department.
- Responsible for addressing and improving colleague engagement for the delivery of excellent pastoral ministries.
- Assists in the development, revision, and interpretation of all policies owned by Spiritual Services.
- Responsible for staff orientation, including medical record documentation of patient care, and all other aspects of department functioning.
- Functions in the department monthly rotation as a back-up on-call for the on-call chaplain program. Also routinely covers the daily trauma pager in a rotation with the other staff chaplains.
- Responds to spiritual needs and concerns of outlying system hospitals on a limited basis as defined by needs at UMH Sparrow Hospital.
Job Requirements
General Requirements |
* Board Certified Chaplain or certifiable within one year of hiring through the Association of Professional Chaplains or National Association of Catholic Chaplains. |
Work Experience |
* Four units of Clinical Pastoral Education (at least 3 in a hospital setting). * Minimum of at least two years of Pastoral Care experience in a general hospital. * Minimum of at least one year of successful management experience in a congregation, pastoral care department, or other setting. |
Education |
* Master of Divinity Degree or equivalent. |
Specialized Knowledge and Skills |
* Endorsed by her/his denomination to serve in a specialized Pastoral Care setting. * Ability to work well in high demand, high stress environment. Crisis management training (CISM) is encouraged. * Demonstrated ability to find information on the teachings and practices of the religions of the people he/she serves. * Capable of filling the traditional role of clergy. * Demonstrated good listening skills. * Comfortable with his/her own and others' feelings and expressions of emotions. * Demonstrated ability to successfully interact with the diverse population we serve. * Basic computer skills. * Ability to manage stress and stressful situations. * Demonstrates ability to use a keyboard as may be required to perform the essential duties of the job. * Ordination preferred |
