Research Assistant, Microbial Genomics

DESCRIPTION

The Benioff Center for Microbiome Medicine (BCMM) is seeking a Junior/Assistant Specialist to join our Microbial Genomics team and contribute to new and ongoing projects. The BCMM is focused on human microbiome research, with a particular interest in accelerating discovery and translation in the fields of early life microbiome and therapeutic development.

Research projects facilitated through the Microbial Genomics technology hub will be diverse, spanning disciplines within all schools across campus, and may include one or more of the following: Providing guidance on appropriate sample collection and preservation methods, sample extraction for library preparation, sequencing (16S rRNA, ITS2, metagenomics, dual RNASeq) and data analyses. The candidate will provide technical support to the facility, receiving, cataloging, and processing a variety of sample types from investigators across campus. The research assistant will work closely with the Manager, another research assistant, and computational biologist to facilitate timely data generation and analysis. In addition to research projects, the candidate will collaborate with other team members on the development of novel tools to address ongoing challenges in the field of translational microbiome research.

Required Qualifications:

* A B.Sc. or higher in Biology or related field

* Excellent organizational and interpersonal communication skills (verbal and written)

* Willingness and ability to learn new methods and skills for changing research priorities.

* Ability to work independently and as a member of a research team.

* Ability to prioritize tasks, coordinate work tasks with others, and meet multiple deadlines.

Preferred Qualifications:

* At least one year of experience in microbiome research

* Prior experience with handling pathogenic microbes, aseptic techniques

* Prior experience in microbial genomics assay implementation, including DNA/RNA extraction, library preparation, and high throughput sequencing (16S rRNA, ITS2, metagenomics, and/or dual RNASeq)

* Prior experience in high throughput sequencing data analysis

* Experience in large-scale sample handling and processing
