General Purpose of Job: Plans, organizes, controls, and supervises activities in hospital pharmacy according to hospital policies, standards of practice of the profession, and State and Federal laws. Recommends innovations in the practice and function of the hospital pharmacy to Administration and carries out mutually agreed upon programs. Essential Duties: This job description is intended to cover the minimum essential duties assigned on a regular basis. Caregivers may be asked to perform additional duties as assigned by their leader. - Develops and implements a strategic plan for the pharmacy that supports the mission and goals of the organization.
- Develops and enforces policies and procedures promoting cost-effective, appropriate, and safe medication use.
- Develops and implements cost reduction strategies to maintain costs within budget and realize cost reduction opportunities.
- Reviews, evaluates and recommends modifications to annual operating budget(s) to provide adequate space and resources needed by the department.
- Recommends new services/modifications to existing services to meet patient needs and provide additional sources of revenue.
- Develops and maintains a medical staff-approved formulary.
- Ensures maintenance of an adequate medication supply. Ensures the integrity of the medication supply. Establishes specifications for the procurement of medications, chemicals, and biologicals.
- Establishes, controls, and actively monitors inventory levels.
- Assures adequate control and documentation of controlled substances.
- Ensures strict control and accountability for medications dispensed to patients.
- Develops and implements pharmacy services in collaboration with associated department services.
- Develops, implements, and maintains a program that improves the quality of pharmacy services and supports the performance improvement plan of the organization.
- Other related duties as assigned.
- Work cooperatively with other members of Sparrow Health System, and hospital and pharmacy staff.
- Participates in all committees/functions required by the organization including the Pharmacy and Therapeutics Committee.
- Maintains departmental charge system for services rendered. Ensures that the system is comprehensive, accurate and timely.
- Plan and monitor the department's expenses, with emphasis on drug expense. Design programs to ensure cost-effective use and procurement of medications.
- Reviews monthly operating budgets and submits variance reports within scheduled time frame.
- Monitors and justifies all expenses exceeding budgeted targets.
- Prepares and justifies annual Capital Equipment and Construction Budgets within defined budget time lines.
- Supervises medication storage and preparation areas throughout the facility and off-site clinics.
- Handle multiple tasks and adapt to changes in workload and work schedule.
- Ability to set priorities, make critical decisions, and responds to concerns.

- Communicate effectively (verbal and written).
Job Requirements
General Requirements |
* Valid State of Michigan Pharmacy license in good standing with the State of Michigan * Valid State of Michigan Controlled Substance license in good standing with the State of Michigan |
Work Experience |
* Minimum of 5 years leadership experience in a managerial position in hospital pharmacy setting. |
Education |
* B.S. or PharmD from an ACPE-accredited School of Pharmacy and a current pharmacist license in good standing with the appropriate State Board of Pharmacy. |
Specialized Knowledge and Skills |
* Thorough knowledge of state and federal laws and regulations governing pharmacy services. * Interpersonal skills and ability to effectively interact with associates, patients, physicians and other individuals. * Demonstrates ability to use a keyboard as may be required to perform the essential duties of the job. * Thorough knowledge of state and federal laws and regulations governing pharmacy services. * Proficient in the use and application of new medications and technology. * Leadership, administrative, human resource, and managerial skills. * Demonstrated ability to effectively participate on interdisciplinary teams and committees. * Effective verbal and written communication skills. * Knowledge of pathophysiology, interpretation of diagnostic criteria, pharmacokinetics and pharmacotherapeutics. * Problem solving ability and analytical thinking. * Demonstrates ability to use a keyboard as may be required to perform the essential duties of the job. * Experience using computer applications including word processing, spreadsheets, and pharmacy information systems. |
