Basic Function |
The Assistant Director, International Student Support serves as the Primary Designated School Official (
PDSO) for F-1 students, to include researching, monitoring, and reporting information to ensure compliance with federal immigration regulations. This critical role manages the Student and Exchange Visitor Information System (
SEVIS), supports Denison's federally mandated reporting to the U.S. Department of Homeland Security (
DHS), and advises the international student population. The AD develops and provides programmatic support to international students throughout the course of their Denison experience, administers international student orientation, liaises with other important offices on campus, and develops and communicates critical information to students in support of their success. The AD is expected to be highly communicative and work collaboratively in the Center for Global Programs (CfGP). The role requires availability for communication and coordination with other campus offices in crisis situations after normal business hours and on weekends if necessary. |
Essential Job Functions |
1. Serve as the Primary Designated School Official (
PDSO) for F-1 students to ensure compliance with the Student and Exchange Visitor Program; coordinate ongoing education for students about their legal rights and responsibilities in order to remain in lawful F-1 student status; process student requests such as I-20 applications, I-20 reprints, travel signatures,
SEVIS transfers, work authorizations such as Curricular Practical Training (
CPT), Optional Practical Training (
OPT), and
STEM
OPT extensions
2. Foster cross cross-cultural understanding across the institution; partner and communicate with various campus support units and colleagues in the Center for Global Programs to develop and execute programmatic support for international students (mentoring programs, information sessions, academic initiatives).
3. Administer and execute the first-year international student orientation and arrivals process, to include maintaining close communication with Denison's First-year office and Office of Enrollment Management; organizing and arranging transportation for arrivals; organizing and facilitating welcome events; holding information sessions and following up with requests to incoming students.
4. Assist students in adjusting to life at Denison by providing guidance on campus academic and personal support resources, clubs, organizations, on and off campus employment, applications for Social Security Numbers, state driver's licenses, etc. |
Minimum Qualifications |
Bachelors Degree; three years of professional work experience working with F-1 visa holders; knowledge of federal immigration regulations; the ability to assess cases and provide solutions based on in-depth knowledge of immigration regulations; knowledge of Microsoft suite, Google suite, and either Terra Dotta or Via
TRM; superb interpersonal and communication skills with the ability to interface effectively in a diverse community; excellent written and verbal communication skills; strong organizational skills which include effective planning, time management, and project management; detail oriented. |
