Job Description

The University of Missouri is seeking a driven individual who will serve as the Public Safety Information Officer (PSIO) in the Office of Media Relations and Public Affairs. The PSIO reports to the Deputy Spokesperson/Public Safety and serves as a liaison between the Division of Marketing and Communications and the MU Police Department. This position oversees message delivery of the emergency notification systems and will communicate regularly with campus and associated stakeholders on public safety topics. This person will assist in developing communication strategies for faculty, staff, and students emphasizing important safety information to help the university maintain campus safety.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES:

  • Serve as a MARCOM liaison to the MU Police Department, responding to information requests regarding police and campus safety information.
  • Operate the emergency notification system in the event of a campus crisis.
  • Create and distribute safety messages, including press releases, articles and reports
  • Regularly help train the communications team for emergencies to ensure all team members are ready to respond
  • Working with the MU Police Department, proactively identify potential safety communications concerns by reviewing data, reporting findings and offering recommendations
  • Serve as after-hours police contact on a rotating basis.
  • Regularly review the crisis communications plan and suggest changes as appropriate
  • Collaborate with MUPD staff to effectively communicate safety issues and promote safety training on campus
  • Work closely with Student Affairs communications team to identify safety concerns and needs among the student population and develop a proactive communications plan to address the identified concerns
  • Other duties as assigned
Shift

8-5 M-F, with some night and weekend hours

Minimum Qualifications

A Bachelor's degree or an equivalent combination of education and experience and at least 4 years of experience from which comparable knowledge and skills can be acquired is necessary.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Excellent writing skills
  • A least 2 years of communications, emergency communications, safety communications or related experience
  • A bachelor's degree in communications, disaster management, public affairs, public relations or a related field, or its equivalent
  • Experience writing communications that represent organizations or organizational leaders
  • Ability to handle multiple tasks or projects in a fast-moving environment while meeting assigned deadlines
  • A high level of discretion, integrity, accuracy and decision-making skills
  • Experience collaborating in a large organization
  • Excellent organization and planning skills.
  • Excellent interpersonal, initiative, teamwork, problem-solving, time management and presentation skills.
  • Available to work some evenings and weekends
  • Familiarity with mass notifications systems
  • Interest in safety and police communications
Anticipated Hiring Range

Salary Range: $58,873-$62,500

Grade: GGS-11
