The Editor is responsible for delivering the highest-quality written products to communicate the Laboratory's research accomplishments and expertise. Edit highly technical research and development content for a sponsor or technical audience, and edit and produce content aimed at a broader and less technical readership. Work independently to compile author-supplied material in a variety of formats to produce understandable content. This position is necessary to support all Laboratory personnel and help them communicate clearly and effectively.

Technical Editing



  • Edit technical, project and miscellaneous reports in all stages from drafts to final output.
  • Copy-edit material for style, consistency, and grammar using established publishing style guides and Lab/program-specific guidelines.
  • Apply Laboratory document formatting standards and marking requirements to appropriate materials



Proofreading and Quality Control



  • Review externally supplied materials for consistency, spelling, and grammar.
  • Review internally produced materials for written consistency and quality prior to final production.
  • Review weekly internal employee newsletter (The Bulletin) for spelling and grammar.



Administrative Editing



  • Edit and proofread high-level conference and other event materials, posters, and personal biographies for content, style and consistency.
  • Ensure distribution statements and markings are included in all material destined for release review.
  • Edit and process all Administrative and Property procedures and notes.



Customer Support



  • Consult with and make editorial recommendations to Laboratory staff on internally produced pamphlets, forms, flyers, report art, and other material from Laboratory customers
  • Under General Direction of the Operational Team Supervisor the editor receives guidance in terms of broad goals and overall objectives and is assigned responsibility for establishing the methods to attain them.
  • Generally the editor is in charge of an area of work, and typically formulates policy for this area but does not necessarily have final authority for approving policy. This position interacts with technical staff and editors in the Laboratory at all levels - report preparation and questions; the Director's Staff for Organizational Development - Leadership Development Offsite; and Technical and administrative staff in technical Divisions to support workshops/conferences.




Qualifications:

Required:



  • B.A. in English or equivalent education or experience
  • 5 years of experience editing and/or writing for a technical or academic audience
  • 1 year of experience working with Web-based content
  • 4 years of experience in a creative environment
  • Superb knowledge of English Language and publishing conventions
  • Expertise with Microsoft Office and Adobe Creative Suite products
  • Ability to obtain and maintain a security clearance



Preferred:



  • Educational background in scientific/technical field is preferred.
