DevSci Translational Safety EiC Summer Internship

Department Summary

Development Sciences (DevSci) spans the entire drug discovery and development cycle - from early stage research to drug commercialization. Part of the drug development pipeline in DevSci includes the preclinical safety evaluation of candidate therapeutic molecules by toxicologists and pathologists in the Translational Safety (TS) department in order to enable further evaluation in humans. Translational Safety is an integral part of DevSci. We contribute to the organization's success by providing scientific insights and ensuring the safety of molecules that advance through the pipeline to patients. We do this to support the DevSci vision to deliver the right drug in the right dose to the right patient. This internship position is located in South San Franciso, on-site

Job Responsibilities

The Computational Toxicology group at Genentech's Translational Safety department is seeking a talented summer intern to join the group and contribute to the ongoing in vivo toxicity data and modeling initiatives. The intern will evaluate the use of R Shiny applications to summarize, analyze and visualize these data. A part of this effort will be to first integrate external with internal in vivo toxicity data. The intern will closely work with computational toxicologists in assisting them develop predictive models using these data. A key part of the role will be to deliver presentations (oral and poster) to share findings with the members of the Translational Safety department and key project team collaborators.

Program Highlights

  • Intensive 12 week, full-time (40 hours per week) paid internship.

  • Program start dates are in May/June (Summer).

Who You Are

Required Education:

  • Must be pursuing a Master's degree (enrolled student), or

  • Must have attained a Master's degree (within 2-years of graduation), or

  • Must be pursuing a PhD (enrolled student).

Required Majors:

BioInformatics, Machine Learning & AI, Data Science, (Computational) Toxicology, Computational Biology, Computer Science etc.

Required Skills:

  • Familiarity with R programming language and desired experience with R Shiny applications.

  • Excellent data analytics and data management capabilities.

  • Familiarity with database technologies such as MySQL, SQLite etc.

  • Good communication, collaboration, and interpersonal skills.

Preferred Skills:

  • Basic to intermediate proficiency in Python.

  • Experience developing predictive models using classical or modern machine learning methods.

  • Familiarity with biomedical concepts such as pharmacology and toxicology.

The expected salary range for this position based on the primary location of California is $45-$50 hour. Actual pay will be determined based on experience, qualifications, geographic location, and other job-related factors permitted by law. This position also qualifies for paid holiday time off benefits.
