The Associate Data Scientist uses mathematical and statistical concepts and theories to collect and analyze data to support the identification of solutions to business problems. Designs experiments and methodologies to generate and collect data for business use by using a full spectrum of machine learning models, database design, and predictive analytics solutions.

Responsibilities include but are not limited to:
  • Initially performs under supervision and mentorship of senior professionals, but self -motivated to develop quickly to perform with limited supervision.
  • Identifies sources of credible data and maintains data catalogs to provide key data sources to internal and external stakeholders.
  • Performs statistical analysis on experimental or business data to identify, validate and quantify trends or patterns based on guidance from business or research leaders.
  • Cleanses, structures and transforms data to test hypothesis, model complex systems and identify patterns. Prepares and analyzes program/model output to allow for efficient data analysis.
  • Conducts in-depth data analyses using traditional and statistical methods. Implements algorithms and software to perform analyses.
  • Constructs predictive models, algorithms and probability engines to support data analysis or product functions; verifies model and algorithm effectiveness based on real-world results.
  • Transforms complex data into creative graphs, tables, charts and other graphics in order to present and/or share the data in a comprehensive and concise manner.
  • Imports and exports data between external RDBMS and the Hadoop Cloudera cluster.
  • Writes query to filter data or join multiple data sets.
  • Writes supporting methodology, analysis and data visualizations to communicate complex ideas to business stakeholders.

Required Skills:


  • Ability to communicate both verbally and written to employees in the business units utilizing non-technical language.
  • Experience with machine learning.
  • Ability to develop in Python and or Scala language or R.
  • Experience utilizing Spark and Hadoop.
  • Experience utilizing SQL and HIVE tables.
  • Knowledge of Machine Learning and Computational Statistics.
  • Knowledge of Microsoft Azure preferred.
  • Demonstrated ability to experiment and explore data sets to derive meaningful insights.
  • Familiarity with BI Visualization tools like MS PowerBI.
  • Comfortable in an environment of ambiguity and uncertainty.


Required Experience:


  • Bachelor's Degree in Computer Science or a related IT degree or in a quantitative field plus formal training, participation in or completed a Valley Bank Internship Program. Proven ability to demonstrate intellectual curiosity and ability to learn quickly.

  • Python development experience preferred.
