The Position

2025 Summer Intern - Neuroscience - Translational Neuroscience

Department Summary

The Neuroscience department is focused on studying the biology of neurodegenerative diseases and translating these findings into therapeutics for the treatment of neurological disorders. The Translational Neuroscience group provides in vivo support for drug development. We characterize mouse models of neurodegenerative disease including Alzheimer's, Parkinson's disease and ALS. We are seeking a talented and highly motivated summer intern to join our lab investigate the effects of TAR DNA binding protein 43 (TDP43) deletion on cellular homeostasis (RNA spicing), neuroinflammation, and development of motor deficits in this mouse model of ALS.

This internship position is located in South San Francisco.

The Opportunity

  • Characterize disease pathology in different TDP43 mouse models of ALS.
  • Section brain tissue, isolate protein/RNA from mouse brain tissue
  • Perform immunohistochemical or immunofluorescence staining of brain tissue followed by microscopy.
  • Perform Western blots or qPCR.
  • Perform behavioral assays to monitor motor coordination, muscle strength, and muscle compound action potential (CMAP).

Who You Are

  • Must be pursuing a Bachelor's degree
  • Must have attained a Bachelor's degree (recent graduates not currently enrolled in a grad program)
  • Must be pursuing a Master's degree
  • Must have attained a Master's degree
  • Must be pursuing a PhD
  • Must have attained a PhD

Preferred majors:

Neuroscience, Molecular Cell Biology, Biochemistry, Immunology

Required Skills:

  • Experienced working "at the bench"
  • Understands and performs immunohistochemistry (IHC)
  • Experience with florescent microscopy
  • In vivo experience handling animals a plus
  • Fast learner

Preferred Knowledge, Skills, and Qualifications

  • Excellent communication, collaboration, and interpersonal skills.

Relocation benefits are not available for this job posting.

The expected salary range for this position based on the primary location of California is $25-$45 hour. Actual pay will be determined based on experience, qualifications, geographic location, and other job-related factors permitted by law. This position also qualifies for paid holiday time off benefits.
