Department Summary

The Genentech Research and Early Development organization is a world-class research and drug development organization. Staffed with some of the world's most brilliant scientists, bioinformaticians, and computational researchers, the breadth and depth of scientific expertise across a broad range of disciplines can't be overstated. Encouraging an open, academic-like atmosphere and frequently publishing in top-tier, peer reviewed journals, scientists work with a variety of technologies including high performance computing (HPC), cloud platforms, modern software development tools, petabyte-scale storage, machine learning, and artificial intelligence.

The Genentech Computational Sciences Department (gCS) is constantly building out next-generation applications and platforms in order to collect and process next-generation data with the goal of making more biological knowledge available to our researchers, including biologists and machine learning engineers.

As part of the Technology Support and Operations (TSO) team, we are searching for a motivated detail-oriented summer intern to work on a communication strategy for supported applications and platforms. The candidate will be responsible for reviewing our current communication strategy and tools, interviewing application teams to gather communication requirements, and proposing a common, standardized communication solution.

This internship is located on-site in South San Francisco, CA.

The Opportunity

  • Review and analyze the current communication strategy and tools used by the Operations Team.

  • Schedule and conduct interviews with various application teams to understand their current communication strategies and requirements.

  • Compile and synthesize the gathered information to identify strengths, weaknesses, and areas for improvement.

  • Work closely with the TSO team to develop a comprehensive, standardized communication strategy which can be adopted across gCS Infrastructure & Architecture.

  • Recommend and propose suitable communication tools to implement the standardized strategy.

  • Prepare and present reports and presentations to stakeholders, highlighting findings and proposed solutions.

  • Assist in the implementation of the new communication strategy and tools (if applicable).

  • Stay informed about best practices and emerging trends in communication strategies and tools within the industry.

Program Highlights

  • Intensive 12-Weeks, full time (40 hours per week) paid internship.

  • Program start dates are in May/June (Summer).

  • A stipend, based on location, will be provided to help alleviate costs associated with the internship.

  • Ownership of challenging and impactful business-critical projects.

  • Work with some of the most talented people in the biotechnology industry.

Who You Are (Required)

Required Education:

  • Must be pursuing a Bachelor's Degree (enrolled student).

Required Majors:

  • Communications, Business, Information Technology, or a related field.

Required Skills:

  • Strong analytical and organizational skills with attention to detail.

  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills.

  • Ability to conduct interviews and collect data effectively.

  • Proficiency in using various communication tools and platforms.

  • Ability to work independently as well as part of a team.

  • Strong problem-solving skills and a proactive mindset.

  • Basic knowledge of project management principles is a plus.

Relocation benefits are not available for this job posting.

The expected salary range for this position based on the primary location of California is $23-$31 hour. Actual pay will be determined based on experience, qualifications, geographic location, and other job-related factors permitted by law. This position also qualifies for paid holiday time off benefits.
