About the Department
The mission of PowerAmerica - Next Generation Power Electronics Manufacturing Innovation Institute (the Institute) is to develop advanced manufacturing processes and designs that will enable large-scale production and adoption of wide bandgap ( WBG) semiconductors chips and power electronics.. This will allow power electronic systems to be smaller, faster, more robust, and more efficient than silicon systems. This project unites academic, government, and industry partners to revolutionize energy efficiency across a wide range of applications, including electronic devices, power grids, and electric vehicles. Specifically, the Institute will:

  • Develop critical WBG power electronic technologies addressing the entire supply chain
  • Support WBG chip fabrication in US fabs
  • Accelerate commercialization in high value markets by stimulating demand through manufacturing demonstrations and derisking
  • Support and grow the WBG manufacturing base
  • Nurture the U.S. WBG semiconductor industry through education programs and training
