Primary Purpose of Organizational Unit
Fleet Services serves as the central administrator for UNC-owned vehicles, leased vehicles and grounds equipment. The Fleet Manager manages two service stations which provide fuel; vehicle and equipment maintenance; and pooled vehicle resources to Facilities Services and campus customers. Administrative responsibilities include collecting and entering NC Motor Fleet vehicle logs into a state-wide system for monthly billing; fleet policy development; implementation of strategic initiatives; operating central equipment and vehicle pools; responding to the state Department of Administration on UNC citizen vehicle complaints; managing the state-required vehicle exemption process; recommendations and assistance for replacement and purchasing of campus vehicles and equipment; and customer billing for all fleet-related vehicles.
Position Summary
A SIGN-ON BONUS OF $4,293 IS AVAILABLE FOR THE SUCCESSFUL APPLICANT OF THIS POSITION PAID IN 2 INSTALLMENTS WITHIN 12 MONTHS OF HIRE:
$2,146.50 WITHIN 30 DAYS OF HIRE DATE & $2,146.50 12 MONTHS AFTER HIRE DATE.


Leads and participates in the repair and maintenance of 800+ vehicles and pieces of motorized equipment, including UNC-owned and NC Motor Fleet vehicles. Duties include but are not limited to oil changes and lubrication; tune-ups; replacement of electrical system components; replacement of water, fuel and power steering pumps; cooling system service; brake service; exhaust system repair/replacement; transmission and clutch service; complete engine overhaul; and computerized wheel balancing using a machine. Diagnoses computer controlled systems and makes repairs that are consistent with industry standards.
Minimum Education and Experience Requirements
High school diploma or equivalency; or demonstrated possession of the competencies necessary to perform the work. Optional Guidelines: Experience in the field of work related to the position's role may be substituted on a year-for-year basis.
Required Qualifications, Competencies, and Experience
Working knowledge in the automotive/light truck repair industry. Ability to diagnose computer-controlled systems in today's vehicles a must. Ability to report to work in support of mandatory (essential) University operations, even when the University is closed due to adverse weather or other emergency events. Must possess a valid North Carolina Driver's License or have the ability to obtain one prior to start date. Also requires a NC State Inspector's License or the ability to achieve certification within six months.
Preferred Qualifications, Competencies, and Experience
Preference given to applicants who have a strong background in diagnostic trouble shooting; diagnosing electrical problem; repairing hydraulic system, working on heavy equipment, performing welding and fabrication.

**ELIGIBILITY FOR SIGN-ON BONUS

The selected candidate for this position may be eligible for a sign-on bonus. Qualified applicants must apply and be selected from the candidate pool of this posting and meet the State policy following requirements:

To be eligible for a Sign-on bonus, an individual must not have worked in a probationary, permanent, or time-limited appointment in the last 12 months as an employee in North Carolina state government, including but not limited to the judicial system, state executive branch agencies, and the university system in a position subject to the State Human Resources Act.

A newly hired permanent full time or permanent part-time (more than 20 hours a week) employee are eligible for a sign-on bonus (this will be prorated for employees working more than 20 hours and less than 40 hours per week).
