About the role We are seeking a talentedControl System Engineer (Engineer II)to support and improve our Fixed Plant Operations.This includes the Boric Acid, Primary Process, Fusing and Shipping Plants at our open pit Boron mine in Boron, CA. This role is a great opportunity to join a technical team and contribute to the success of the Rio Tinto. Reporting to the Engineering and Controls Superintendent you will:
- Ensure compliance with health, safety, environmental and quality programs and standards for Rio Tinto Minerals and outside regulatory agencies.
- Promote behavioral safety.
- Establish a constructive culture in the team by demonstrating and utilizing appropriate leadership behavior, symbols and systems.
- Support process control by interfacing with Programmable Logic Controller (PLC) systems, configuring software and graphics, tuning controllers, and auditing loop performance.
- Manage and troubleshoot control systems hardware, including input/output errors, controllers, consoles, and networks, while maintaining spare parts inventory.
- Instruct electricians in field device work related to the control systems to assure field devices are interfaced, tested, and functioning correctly.
- Lead or assist troubleshooting efforts associated with the control systems to avoid or minimize production upsets and/or downtime.
- Participate in the on-call schedule for weekends, holidays, and after-hours support.
- Support Operations by assisting in training operators on how the control systems functions and in diagnosing operating problems.
- Manage and enhance control systems, including network infrastructure, and lead or assist in system upgrade projects.
- Communicate effectively during functional checkouts, start-up, and commissioning of process control related projects.
- Read and interpret drawings (P&ID, Logic, etc.) sketches, graphs, charts, vendor specifications, and instructional materials to make equipment work properly.
- Schedule own daily activities to satisfy production requirements and accommodate requests from other departments.
- Remain flexible and willing to work on different assignments as required.
About you To be successfully considered for this role, you will have:
- Bachelor or Master's degree in Electrical, Computer or Electronics or related field.
- Minimum of two years of prior experience with Allen Bradley or Modicon PLCs and Factorytalk View or Wonderware HMIs.
- Prior experience with different industrial networks including but not limited to Modbus+, Ethernet and DeviceNet is an asset.
- Experience with Virtual Machines (VMs), Servers, Networks, Radios and Switches is a plus.
- Strong analytical, organizational, and problem-solving skills for complex problems that are encountered
- Experience in troubleshooting and repair of Control Systems
