Overview:

We are seeking an Electronics Engineer who will focus on developing electronic designs for beamline control systems including motion control, sample environment and a variety of other interfaces associated with beamline data acquisition. This position resides in the DAQ Hardware Group in the Neutron Instrument Technologies Section, Neutron Technologies Division, Neutron Sciences Directorate at Oak Ridge National Laboratory (ORNL).

Major Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Contribute to the design and improvement of electrical systems for instrument projects, including preparing drawings, wiring diagrams, and assembly/test instructions.

  • Assist with technical guidance to staff fabricating instrument control assemblies, ensuring accuracy and compliance with specifications.

  • Monitor and manage inventory of spare assemblies, components, and cables, and coordinate procurement as needed.

  • Perform troubleshooting of electrical systems using electronic test equipment and assist with routine maintenance and new installations.

  • Support the assembly of prototype platforms and test stands as required.

  • Follow SNS and HFIR work control procedures for installations, preventative maintenance, and data acquisition/control system support.

  • Provide occasional off-hours and weekend support to meet 24/7 operational requirements for HFIR and SNS facilities.

  • Obtain and maintain required certifications, including radiation worker and electrical worker qualifications, to ensure compliance and perform job-related duties.

Basic Qualifications:

  • A BS in electronics, engineering, or related field, and 5 or more years of applicable experience.

  • Strong understanding of electro-mechanical assemblies, including precision positioning systems.

  • Proficiency with test equipment such as multimeters, oscilloscopes, and function generators, along with experience using basic hand and power tools.

  • Experience utilizing CAD software such as AutoCAD to design electrical control systems.

  • Experience with Windows Operating System and Microsoft Office suite.

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Proficiency in designing layouts, schematics, and connection diagrams for large-scale projects with minimal supervision.

  • Familiarity with Galil and Parker motion control systems.

  • Familiarity with Allen-Bradley PLCs and HMIs.

  • Strong ability to interpret manufacturer data sheets, technical documents, and test procedures accurately.

  • Effective written and verbal communication skills for collaboration and documentation.

  • Familiarity with PID control systems, LabVIEW, and Linux operating systems.

  • Previous experience at a National Laboratory or scientific research facility is highly advantageous.

  • Commitment to ongoing skill development and professional growth.

Special Requirements:

  • Ability to lift and carry objects weighing up to 30 pounds.

  • Ability to navigate stairs safely and efficiently.
