The Underwriting Consultant is responsible for underwriting, pricing and processing accounts in accordance with established underwriting and service standards while following guidelines and authority limits.

This includes analyzing benefit plan characteristics through case risk evaluation, product pricing and making appropriate risk decisions on new and renewal business. The Underwriting Consultant is responsible for preparing, delivering proposals, and negotiating solutions.

This role is part of National Accounts Specialty Benefits Underwriting team. The Specialty Benefits team is responsible for Financial Protection (Life, Disability and/or Critical Illness, Accident and Hospital Indemnity), Dental and Vision.

You'll enjoy the flexibility to work remotely * from anywhere within the U.S. as you take on some tough challenges. (Hartford, CT hybrid preferred)

Primary Responsibilities:



  • Prepare financial experience rating calculations and other ongoing financial reviews that directly aligns with client strategies
  • Validate renewals and request for proposals for accuracy including utilization and experience reporting
  • Conduct competitive analysis of all coverage lines and present financial and contractual findings to Management
  • Evaluate, recommend and negotiate pricing as well as providing potential alternatives and options for NB and Renewal groups with internal and external customers
  • Effectively communicate to sales personnel pricing recommendations and financial position

Required Qualifications:



  • 2+ years of previous specialty underwriting experience
  • Proven excellent communication skills, both orally and in writing
  • Proven solid analytical skills
  • Proven solid negotiation skills
  • Proven intermediate level of proficiency with MS office suite (Word, Excel, PowerPoint)



Preferred Qualifications:



  • 3+ years of experience with Risk Management
  • 3+ years of data analysis and reporting experience
  • 2+ years of presentation experience

Residents Only: The salary range for this role is $70,200 to $137,800 annually. Pay is based on several factors including but not limited to local labor markets, education, work experience, certifications, etc. UnitedHealth Group complies with all minimum wage laws as applicable.
