This position is part of a collective bargaining unit. Pay for this position will be $55.63 per hour. Rate is determined by collective bargaining agreement.

Job Summary:

Under minimal supervision of the paint & carpentry shop Foreman, assists with the management of all shop-related work and personnel associated with the maintenance, upkeep, and renewal of the Chicago campus buildings' and structures, paint, finishes, wall coverings, window films, and signage, to include carpentry and paint related work and personnel. Coordinates and implements various maintenance and related projects which includes estimating scope and costs, and supervising multiple crews including contractor support. Provides direction to staff with responsibility for managing and evaluating performance. Ensures timely completion of all shop-related paperwork and electronic approvals including service requests and timesheets. Cultivates good customer relations.

Specific Responsibilities:

  • Supports the Paint & Carpentry Shop Foreman with the planning, direction and coordination of maintenance and renewal associated with the infrastructure and systems maintained by the carpentry and paint shops, o meet the established annual budget, including the hiring and management of contractors as required;
  • Organizes work for planned and unscheduled maintenance tasks directed to carpentry and paint staff for efficient and effective performance;
  • Performs trade-specific work on campus including drywall taping, preparatory work, application of primers, paint, stains and varnish, and carpenter related work assignments, etc;
  • Maintains good order and discipline among personnel in the paint & carpentry shops consistent with University and departmental policies, initiating commendatory or corrective action as appropriate;
  • Evaluates completed work for quality and neatness in the paint & carpentry shops.
  • Identifies and recommends employee safety, technical, soft-skill training, and professional development opportunities as required to ensure optimum unit performance and development;
  • Prepares written and oral reports on the condition, renewal needs, and routine maintenance of facilities, components, and related activities including post-incident summaries and root cause analyses;
  • Interviews and recommends hiring or promotion of qualified staff, and performs annual employee performance reviews of subordinate personnel;
  • Estimates shop-related project work scope, budgets, and timelines;

Performs other duties as assigned.

Minimum Qualifications:

  • High school diploma or equivalent combination of education and experience from which comparable skills can be acquired;
  • Minimum two (2) or more years of supervisory experience in planning, directing, and coordinating shop-related work or (1) year of supervisory experience in planning, directing, and coordinating shop-related work and a general knowledge of Northwestern's maintenance and renewal procedures'
  • Five (5) years of work experience in interior and exterior painting at the journey level;
  • Be a member of Laborers Local 681, or join after one month of employment;
  • Possess and maintain a valid driver's license recognized by the State of Illinois, provide own reliable transportation, and purchase a University parking permit.

  • Thorough knowledge of the tools, application methods and standard trade safety practices;
  • Complete knowledge of the proper handling, mixing and disposal of toxic or potentially hazardous materials;
  • Excellent written & oral communications & listening skills;
  • Exceptional customer relationship skills and the ability to establish effective working relationships in a diverse environment;
  • Physical ability to climb and descend ladders work on scaffolding lift or other support apparatus and to work in cramped quarters. Dexterity is necessary for the use of tools and manipulation of materials;
  • Demonstrated leadership skills and ability to effectively motivate work groups toward defined and agreed upon common goals;
  • Ability to perform calculations applicable to field of experience;
  • Receptive to feedback, willing to learn, embracing of continuous improvement;
  • Helpful, respectful, approachable, collaborative, team oriented;
  • Ability to build strong working relationships and a positive work environment;
  • Integrates health and safety precautions into daily activities;
  • Proficiency with mobile devices including iOS.

  • Facilitates open and effective communication, cooperation and teamwork within and outside of one's own team;
  • Plans ahead, manages time well and arrives on time;
  • Familiarity with zone maintenance models;
  • Working knowledge of BOCA, ADA, State, Local, and other associated building codes;
  • Successfully uses multiple software program independently. Software may include Microsoft Office applications such as Word, Excel, and Outlook, CMMS Systems, and Peoplesoft;
  • Recommends improvements and opportunities to increase efficiency and reduce costs;
  • Analytical skills including critical thinking, decision making, trouble shooting and problem solving, reading and interpreting technical drawings;
  • Achieves a standard of excellence with work processes and outcomes, honoring University and Department policies and all regulatory requirements.
