Responsibilities:

Assist in operating and maintaining all equipment/systems within the Utilities Operations of each facility so that they are operated safely, reliably and in a cost-effective manner from one planned maintenance outage to the next with no process interruptions.

Provide operational and troubleshooting support for the Utilities Area at each site to resolve issues in a timely manner.

Evaluate Utilities unit operations for efficiency and recommend/implement improvements to maintain or improve productivity to support manufacturing goals for each site.

Effectively communicate equipment needs/strategies to mill personnel and work together to develop strategies to improve the overall operation.

Managing the PCA Utilities Policy Manual so that current policies comply with current BLRBAC and FM Global guidelines/recommendations and assures plants are operated within these guidelines. Develop and communicate "Best Practices" among the mills.

Managing activities of others in the Corporate Utilities Group for overall effectiveness.

Special requirements:



  1. Knowledgeable about industrial boilers used in the pulp & paper industry with special emphasis on recovery boilers and biomass boilers and their auxiliary equipment.
  2. Knowledgeable about turbines, evaporators, air compressors, and other critical equipment in the Utilities area or responsibility.
  3. Process oriented - capable of analyzing boilers and auxiliary support systems to recognize and recommend process improvements to reduce cost/improve reliability.
  4. Able to develop improvement projects from conceptual idea to reality.

    1. Develop scope and cost.
    2. Work with mills to identify benefits and secure funding.
    3. Work with suppliers on scope/cost/performance expectations and warranties.
    4. Plan work so that it can be executed within the timelines provided by typical annual outages to minimize impact to mill operation.
    5. Coordinate work with mill and contractor personnel to assure work quality meets all codes and PCA policies.
    6. Follow up during commissioning of equipment to assure all project goals are met/exceeded.


  5. Familiar with boiler failure analysis tools and techniques. Responsible for organizing failure analysis and recommendations to prevent further issues.




  1. Basic knowledge and understanding of:

    1. Boiler water chemistry and control
    2. BLRBAC safe practices and recommendations
    3. FM Global recommendations
    4. Energy Balances and energy distribution systems
