The School of Environmental and Biological Sciences ( SEBS) has the only landscape architecture program in the state. The department's mission is to provide a creative, analytic, and interdisciplinary approach to stewardship of the environment through planning and design. We engage students in art, science, theory, and practice with a commitment to equitable, sustainable, and resilient solutions that contribute to human and environmental health and well-being.
This position bridges the gap between academically focused climate action and community grounded nature-based solutions to explore resilient alternatives to the natural, rural, farmland, suburban, and urban open space that exists across the state. The position will focus on applied research, community visioning and student service learning to develop nature-based solutions that focus on urban resilience, green infrastructure, city greening, long term resilience management and environmental community art to address climate change, creativity, cultural diversity, and human expression.

Qualifications


Minimum Education and Experience
(1) MLA/MArch/Master of Planning or equivalent advanced degree; (2) evidence of professional practice and/or outreach experience; (3) interest in and ability to effectively teach design studio and seminars at undergraduate and graduate levels; (4) experience in grant-funded research and /or in engagement with diverse organizations and publics; (5) interest in and ability to contribute to the mission of the department.
A PhD in landscape architecture or related field and a professional license in landscape architecture or planning is strongly desired but not required.

Overview
The Department of Landscape Architecture in the School of Environmental and Biological Sciences at Rutgers, The State University of New Jersey, invites applicants for a tenure-track Assistant Professor in Landscape Architecture position with an anticipated start date of September 1, 2025. We welcome participants in the landscape performance, environmental design, urban planning, participatory design and environmental justice fields.
A faculty hire in Resilient Open Space Design, Management and Engagement is core to the mission of the department and education of future Landscape Architecture and Environmental Planning professionals. The successful candidate will have access to centers of research on campus (such as the Rutgers Climate Energy Institute, The Center for Urban Environmental Sustainability, Institute of Food Nutrition and Health, Eagleton Institute for Politics, The Institute for Research on Women, Office of Urban Extension and Engagement) and engage with recognized research faculty within the department and the University community. Job duties include establishing and directing an independent research program, pursuing and securing grant funding, undergraduate and graduate teaching in design and planning studios and other courses, and service on departmental committees
