Overview:

We are hiring a Team Lead for the Knowledge Discovery Infrastructure (KDI), a team whose focus is on supporting our researchers' IT needs to provide world-changing science impacting humanity, our local community, and the nation, including our veterans! Our goal to is to enable research while protecting ORNL assets, especially from cyber security risks. This position resides in the Support Services and Isolated Environments group of the Research Computing Division of the Information Technology Services Directorate at Oak Ridge National Laboratory (ORNL).

As team lead, much of your time is dedicated to directing our systems engineers. Additionally, your time will be focusing on long-term strategy and the oversight of technical operations supporting customers and projects directly.

What will you be doing?

Ensuring the KDI staff supplies a variety of IT services to research, such as infrastructure, HPC engineering, software engineering, user support, dedicated program support, data management and engineering expertise, and consultative services. You will lead a dedicated team in providing PHI, PII, and other enhanced data protection support within the KDI enclave for special research programs, requiring an understanding of data sensitivity and enhanced security. Engage with research programs and IT staff to manage expectations and delivery of services.

Major Duties/Responsibilities:

Strategic plan delivery activities include:

  • Develop and implement a five-year strategy for the protected enclave including a detailed roadmap for outlining the steps required to achieve the vision, customer growth initiatives, and capacity planning to accommodate future growth.
  • Identify critical metrics to measure the success of the protected enclave.
  • Develop business relationships with customers of KDI, understanding their business needs, and where IT could provide these services.
  • Develop and implement strategies to attract and retain new customers.
  • Ensure compliance with NIST 800-53 moderate confidentiality, HIPAA, and other protected data requirements.
  • Project management of informal to formal projects ensuring on-time, on-scope, and on-budget delivery.

Staff management activities include:

  • Hire, develop, and coach staff to ensure project and team success.
  • Performance management, including creation of yearly performance and development plans, and year-end assessments.
  • Meet routinely with staff to understand current projects and assist with removing roadblocks.
  • Time and attendance oversight and approval.
  • Develop and manage training plan and budget.
  • Provide reports as requested, such as major accomplishments or staffing per project.

Individual Contributor:

  • Collaborate with other ITSD team leads to deliver innovative solutions.
  • Lead all aspects of the design, implementation, and maintenance of IT infrastructure and systems.
  • Stay up to date with the latest technology trends and industry best practices.

Basic Qualifications:

  • A BS degree in computer science, computer engineering, information systems, business, technology, science or related field of study and eight (8) to twelve (12) years of aligned experience is required for consideration. An overall combination of equivalent experience may be considered.
  • Four (4) to five (5) years of management experience, including training and mentoring groups and individuals in complex technical environments.
  • Experience in managing technical projects.
  • Excellent problem-solving and decision-making skills.
  • Strong communication and interpersonal skills.

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Experience training and mentoring groups and individuals in complex technical environments.
  • In-depth understanding of NIST 800-53 moderate confidentiality, HIPAA, and other protected data requirements.
  • Experience with project management methodologies.
  • Excellent interpersonal skills suitable for communication with customers and management.
  • Demonstrated ability to lead (projects, teams, etc.)

Special Requirements:

  • Visa sponsorship is not available for this position.
  • This position requires the ability to obtain and maintain a clearance from the Department of Energy. As such, this position is a Workplace Substance Abuse (WSAP) testing designated position. WSAP positions require passing a pre-placement drug test and participation in an ongoing random drug testing program.
