Primary Purpose of Organizational Unit |
The Chemistry Department is one of the largest and most complex departments in the College of Arts and Sciences. There are 50 faculty members, 44
SHRA and 37
EHRA staff positions, 260 graduate students, 37 postdoctoral research associates, 700 undergraduate majors, and an annual total of approximately 10,000 registrations by all students in classroom and laboratory courses. The Department is housed in five buildings with over 580,000 sq. feet of space. The faculty participate in teaching assignments which involve an average of 200 students per faculty member per semester. The majority of faculty are research active and supervise graduate students working on their Masters or Ph.D. degrees, undergraduate students carrying out independent research and honors programs, research technicians and postdoctoral research associates. Primarily the research is funded by federal and private agencies such as
NSF,
NIH, Army, Navy,
DOE,
PRF and involves expenditures of more than nineteen million dollars annually. A total of over thirty-two million dollars from all sources is expended annually in the Department. |
Position Summary |
This Accountant position reports directly to the Accounting Manager and will be part of the accounting team, responsible for the management and coordination of all non-grant financial operations of the department, including approval, monitoring, and projection of expenditures and reporting of fund balances on all department state, trust, recharge and overhead funds. Duties performed by this position include, but are not limited to, budget transfers, budget journals, fund swaps, PAAT's, lump sum payments, complex journal entries, and source creation. This position is also responsible for preparing financial reports on a regular basis and on request, including financial reporting as requested by the Dean's Office. This role may provide budget assistance, process tuition, fee, and award payments, and review, audit, and approve transactions in the various financial systems.
This is a complex, multi-fund task, requiring a thorough understanding of the department's endowed trusts, expendable trusts, recharge, state and F&A funds. The Accountant will perform intricate finance functions requiring the ability to comprehend and apply accounting, budgeting and finance terms, theories, principles, and practices. The position will ensure that policies, procedures, guidelines, rules and regulations of the university, and department are followed consistently and aid in establishing, continuously improving, and documenting departmental policies and procedures.
This position will also supervise two accounting technicians responsible for day-to-day financial processing accounts payable and travel for the department of Chemistry. |
Minimum Education and Experience Requirements |
Bachelor's degree with 12 credit hours of accounting coursework; or Associate's degree in accounting; or Associate's degree in business or related discipline with 12 credit hours of accounting coursework; or equivalent combination of training and experience. All degrees must be received from appropriately accredited institutions. |

- Experience with ConnectCarolina Finance Workcenter, Concur, Infoporte, and other relevant
UNC systems |
