Job Summary

The primary role of this position is to provide direct supervision and oversight for the Patient Care Services Lift Technicians. This position will also provide supervisory coverage for the Patient Transporters, Mental Health Workers, Special Duty Caregivers, Telesitters and Volunteers as needed.

Minimum Qualifications

  • Must receive American Heart Association (AHA) Basic Life Support (BLS) CPR Certification within 3 months of employment and maintains current.
  • Required University-provided training and testing (i.e., lift equipment/assistive devices, proper body mechanics, etc.)
  • Required University-provided training and testing Code Blue Training
  • Required University-provided training and testing Nonviolent Crisis Intervention Training
  • Required University-provided training and testing Maintaining the Dignity of Morbid Obesity in the Hospital Setting
  • Bachelor's Degree in related area and or equivalent experience / training
  • Supervisory experience or an equivalent combination of such education and experience
  • Experience conducting group and individual training sessions.
  • Experience in recognizing and reporting problems with life support equipment or a sudden change in a patient's condition.
  • Experience safely operating wheelchairs, gurneys, electric beds, cribs, and special beds.
  • Skills to supervise a technical team and to manage multiple competing priorities in a fast-paced, dynamic environment.
  • Supervisory skills related to recruitment, organizing, scheduling, and assigning work, training and evaluating work performance, implementing counseling, discipline and corrective actions.
  • Strong knowledge of patient care support activities, systems, external regulations, and internal policies.
  • Knowledge of Fair Labor Practices, Collective Bargaining Agreements, and University policies and procedures.
  • Organizational skills to provide direct supervision to licensed and unlicensed employees.
  • Demonstrated analytical experience with the ability to identify, analyze, report and resolve problems accurately and timely. Knowledge and ability to exercise discretion, use good judgment and maintain confidentiality.
  • Experience establishing and maintaining effective working relationships.
  • Ability to coach and mentor employees, promoting teamwork and encouraging professional development.
  • Solid interpersonal skills for effective information exchange and problem solving with all levels of management and staff, consultants, and outside agencies.
  • Ability to maintain composure, respond calmly, and use sound judgment during medical emergencies.
  • Knowledge of and experience safely operating safe patient handling equipment including lifts, friction reducing devices, powered and non-powered patient equipment.
  • Knowledge of proper body mechanics and patient transfer techniques. and skill to transfer patients without injury to self, patient or others.
  • Knowledge of and ability to follow appropriate Infection control techniques to safeguard other patients and visitors from infected patients.
  • Knowledge and skills to perform CPR
  • Knowledge of O2, IVs/pumps, feeding tubes/pumps, foley bags, and chest tubes.
  • Strong computer skills including EMR, e-mall, PC based programs, and MS Word and Excel applications.
  • Knowledge of business software and specialized applications and data management systems used in nursing units or departments.
  • Skilled in written and verbal communication, with the ability to convey complex clinical and technical Information In a clear and concise manner, and to produce a variety of reports and analyses. Experience preparing reports, memorandums and documents.
  • Ability to read, write, and comprehend the English language.
  • Ability to use a calculator and possess basic math skills.
  • Ability to maintain a culture that values diversity, respect and accepts the contribution of others, and supports open communication.
  • Judgment skills to make independent clinical decisions.
  • Skills to work accurately and quickly under pressure.
  • Knowledge of legal implications for clinical practice.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Certification in Safe Patient Handling.
  • Prior experience in-patient care setting; assisting in safe patient handling, mobility, and emergency code blue situations is highly recommended.

Department Overview

Patient Support Services consist of Lift Team, Mental Health Workers, and Special Duty Caregivers and the Patient Transport Department.

The Lift Team performs patient handling activities for inpatient departments/units using SPH techniques and equipment in collaboration with the RN and other healthcare providers. Lift Techs serve as a resource in the use of Safe Patient Handling (SPH) equipment and movement of patients. Lift Techs also serve as body mechanics and SPH coaches and trainers for staff involved in patient handling. Must be familiar with standard precautions and isolation procedures. Must be skilled in best practices related to patient lifting, proper body mechanics and testing for minimal assistance, safe patient handling and safe practice and procedures. Must be skilled in handling bariatric patients and pediatric patients.

Under the direction of a Registered Nurse, the Special Duty Caregiver (SDCG) assists professional and technical personnel in the observation of patients, some of whom may require continuous, intermittent or video observation. The goal of observation is to prevent harm to the patient and to reassure patient of safety and prevent removal of tubes or special devices that may result in a negative medical outcome.

The Mental Health Worker (MHW) assists professional and technical personnel in the observation of patients, some of whom may require continuous, intermittent, or video observation. The goal of observation is to prevent harm to the patient, staff, and to reassure patient safety and prevent any harm that may result in a negative medical outcome. The MHW may assist the Registered Nurse with routine patient care such as feeding, hygiene needs, as well as organizing activities and interactive therapy sessions with continuous observation of patients. MHWs also help to ensure that a calm, safe setting is maintained while gaining insight into treatment options for patients and participating in patient's treatment planning with nursing staff and doctors.

The Patient Transport Services department provides coordinated, centrally dispatched transportation services for patients being treated in the outpatient clinics and the inpatient units and diagnostic areas. The unit also provides information and assistance to patients, visitors, hospital staff, and the public.
