General Description
We are seeking an experienced General Assignment News Editor to take on a critical role on our daily news and features editorial team for Vision Monday and 20/20, part of the Jobson Optical Group, a division of WebMD. This job entails reporting, researching, and writing timely and accurate news stories, features, special projects and reports across print, digital, and social platforms, with an eye toward the business angle. The ideal candidate is an experienced B-to-B journalist and hard news reporter with strong editing and writing skills who is comfortable publishing across multiple channels and passionate about accurate, clear, concise copy.
Responsibilities include identifying newsworthy stories, writing compelling copy, editing articles on a wide array of medical/optical and business topics, ideating on coverage, staying on top of and ahead of trends, and consistently finding creative new ways to connect with readers, in print and online. The News Editor is responsible for news reporting and feature writing for Vision Monday's monthly publication, VMAIL daily newsletter and other assigned projects/products. The editorial role would require knowledge of and/or fluency in the following areas/issues:
  • Larger/national chain retail operations
  • Mergers and consolidations
  • Reading, digesting and translating corporate financial reports into news content
  • Insurance and managed vision care companies and dynamics
  • Supplier focus: digital and supply chain technologies
  • Cultivation of contacts and high-touch source relationships with high-profile companies
  • Professionalism and high ethical standards in honoring and maintaining confidentialities
Job Responsibilities
  • Identify newsworthy stories, proactively reporting and delivering final content for publication in a timely manner
  • Develop new content ideas and work collaboratively on complex news stories
  • Daily, weekly, & monthly reporting of corporate, retail and business news developments
  • Develop creative features and hard news ideas translatable across digital, print and live platforms
  • Ideate news content based on current events and their impact on the business aspects of the optical industry, i.e. threats of recession, tariffs, inflation, etc.
  • Write and copyedit compelling articles, headlines, blurbs, decks, callouts and sidebars for layouts for the various publications and supplements in omnichannel environment
  • Develop a deep bench of news sources and foster relationships with key executives at major eyecare and eyewear companies
  • Respond to reader inquiries and fact check as needed
  • Work with clients, sales and production/design to meet all deadlines as required
  • Represent journal at media events as needed
  • Other duties as assigned
Qualifications
  • BS/BA degree required
  • Minimum of 5+-8 years in news writing/editing
  • Excellent reporting, writing, editing, rewriting and organizational skills
  • Strong command of English grammar and usage
  • Meticulous eye for detail, the ability to write clean and accurate content, and be internet savvy, including posting across social media channels
  • Excellent organizational skills
  • Strong computer skills including MS Office (Word, PowerPoint), PhotoShop (a plus) and skills on a variety of computer and mobile devices for use on social networking
  • Must have the ability to work independently and productively, have a strong sense of responsibility, and be able to manage multiple projects simultaneously
  • Knowledge of health care field and business matters, comfort on camera a plus
  • Familiarity with CMS edit systems
  • Thorough knowledge of social/digital media platforms, reflecting successful program/content initiatives in this arena, linked to the B-to-B arena
  • Familiarity and comfortlevel with the retail business, both brick-and-mortar plus digital; someone who can cover leading groups, spark trend coverage from outside the field
Travel
  • Travel to industry events, meetings & functions required in the U.S. and internationally
