The Christopher Bellona, Timothy Strathmann, and Tzahi Cath Research Groups within the Department of Civil and Environmental Engineering at Colorado School of Mines invites applications for an open postdoc position beginning immediately.
The position focuses on support of a collaborative field demonstration project evaluating removal and destruction of per- and polyfluoroalkyl substances (PFAS) from impacted water streams using a multi-stage treatment train combining physical separation/concentration (via membrane and foam fractionation processes) and destruction of PFAS within the separated concentration streams (via hydrothermal alkaline treatment). The position would also be asked to assist in managing a research group of graduate students. Funding is available for 1 year, with possibility of extension if additional research funding is secured. Candidates should have completed their PhD by July 30, 2024. The position will be available starting Sept 1, 2024.

PRIMARY RESPONSIBILITIES
  • Lead independent research activities in collaboration with faculty advisors
  • Meet weekly with faculty advisors
  • Participate in a bi-monthly, 1-hour research group meeting
  • Experimental design, laboratory skills and data management
  • Write scientific publications, reports, policy briefs, and guidelines
  • Provide support for and/or lead the preparation and submission of proposals for future research funding for the research group
  • Meet weekly with graduate student working on the same and related research project to provide mentoring that supplements that provided by the faculty advisor
  • Assist in Operation of LC-MS systems for analysis of PFAS
  • Manage, operational, financial, and project reports


Minimum Qualifications

Education and Experience:
  • PhD in chemical engineering, environmental engineering, or related field by June 30, 2024
  • Expertise in treatment processes and experience with chemical analysis


Preferred Qualifications

Education and Experience:
  • Experience with treatment of PFAS-contaminated water using physical-chemical unit processes
  • Experience with analytical methods for PFAS characterization
  • Experience and/or interest in constructing and operating pilot-scale treatment systems
  • Strong publication record


Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:
  • Strong writing and communication skills
  • Ability to mentor undergraduate and graduate students
