Brown and Caldwell (BC) has an exciting opportunity to join our team as the Northwest Wastewater Area Practice Leader (APL). BC is a pioneer and recognized industry leader in wastewater treatment. We lead cutting edge research and deliver innovative solutions for our clients on the most challenging wastewater issues in the Northwest. This pivotal position will have the opportunity to build on this legacy and shape the strategy of the wastewater practice in the Northwest. Specifically you will help set priorities for business development, hiring and recruitment, and innovation/research and the utilization rate has been designed to allow you to engage in those activities in a thoughtful and meaningful way.

The Wastewater APL is responsible for driving the growth of the wastewater practice and advancing strategic priorities. In this role, you will also be responsible for understanding the unique trends in your area and using that knowledge to create differentiation from that of our competitors while serving as an important conduit between the National Wastewater Practice and the Western Business Unit (WBU). The APL role is designed to be shared with other responsibilities such as Project Manager, Client Service Manager, or Design Manager based on your specific expertise and relationships.

The candidate must be located in Oregon, Washington, or Idaho. A remote work-from-home arrangement is allowed.

Detailed Description:



  • Develop and drive Area practice strategy- Collaborate with the National Wastewater Practice and WBU Leaders to develop and drive the wastewater strategy in the Northwest. Strategy will include analyzing market-specific trends, competition, clients, needs, and opportunities for the Area and aligning them with WBU and National Practice priorities. In addition utilize intel from Client Service Teams and technical sellers to inform the development and update of the national wastewater practice strategy. Participate in annual business planning for the Area.
  • Drive external visibility and brand projection within the Area- Partner with the Area Growth Leader and Client Service Managers to grow the BC wastewater brand. Develop strategic messaging, highlight BC people, projects, and solutions at conferences, seminars, workshops, client positioning meetings, and facilitate team member visibility.
  • Drive business development based on client-specific needs and opportunities- Collaborate with the Area Growth Leader and Client Service Teams to drive practice growth. Recommend technical resources to engage with the Client Service Team and client to identify opportunities and improve awareness of solutions that will resonate.
  • Build capacity for quality delivery in alignment with BU and strategy by informing needs, recruiting, and developing staff- Identify Area staffing needs and recruits for the wastewater practice. Drive talent strategy, including recruiting efforts for technical talent and intentional development within the Area to support current and future growth. Inform and support company level recruiting, as needed.
  • Bring technical advantage to sales process- Participate in go/no-go decisions to maintain alignment with strategy and resource prioritization. Engage appropriate technical resources and standards to identify efficiencies and client-centric solutions that resonate. Inform project org charts to build skills and quals that support current and future sales and delivery.


Required Qualifications:



  • B.S. in engineering or a related field.
  • Professional Engineer (P.E.) registration(s) in WA and/or OR.
  • Minimum of 10 years of increasingly responsible professional experience in the environmental services or water utility and/or consulting industry.
  • Minimum of 5 years of relevant experience focused on wastewater treatment.
  • Ability to demonstrate experience in guiding technical strategy for a large portfolio of projects and alignment or key technical differentiators and staff to those projects.
  • Outstanding communication skills with the ability to communicate clearly, concisely, and professionally (verbal and written) for technical and non-technical audiences.


Preferred Qualifications:



  • M.S. in engineering or a related field.
  • 15+ years of increasingly responsible professional experience in the environmental services or water utility and/or consulting industry.
  • 10+ years of relevant experience focused on wastewater treatment.
  • Established relationships with municipal clients in the Pacific Northwest region.
  • Prior experience working with regulatory agencies.


Salary Range:Theanticipatedstarting payrange for this position is based on the employee's primary work location and maybemore or lessdependingupon skills, experience,and education. These ranges may be modified in the future.

Location A: $145,000 - $199,000
Location B: $160,000 - $219,000
Location C: $174,000 - $238,000
