Responsibilities

Summary

Under general supervision and as part of a team, the Counselor position is responsible for the administration and scoring of standardized substance abuse screening and assessment instruments for all participants entering the department of corrections. An American Society of Addiction Medicine (ASAM) based level of care will be determined based on the assessment. This position will also provide various levels of substance abuse treatment based on the results of the screening and assessment. Levels of treatment will be consistent with the ASAM Level of Care.

Primary Duties and Responsibilities

  • The Counselor administers, scores and interprets all required screening and assessment tools including but not limited to the Texas Christian University (TCU) Drug Screen, and Treatment Assignment Protocol (TAP).
  • May also use other assessment and substance abuse evaluation tools to support level of care American Society of Addiction Medicine (ASAM) placement.
  • The Counselor conducts screenings and assessments during the intake process and back-end screenings for standing populations.
  • Conducts post testing for participants as they go through the program.
  • The Counselor interviews participants to collect additional data not covered by above assessment tools.
  • Reviews Division of Corrections (DOC) files.
  • The Counselor scores and interprets results of assessment and testing tools.
  • Prepares written reports based on results of assessment and testing tools.
  • The Counselor creates and maintains individual treatment plans for the participants.
  • Conducts individual counseling sessions and group counseling.
  • The Counselor maintains clinical chart per the Code of Maryland (COMAR) regulations and requirement.
  • Completes discharge and aftercare plans.
  • Participates in staffing regarding participants with other team members.
  • Performs other duties as assigned.

Qualifications

Minimum Requirements

  • Associate degree in Health and Human Services counseling field and an Alcohol and Drug Trainee (ADT) designation OR;
    • Bachelor's degree in Health and Human Services, Psychology, Social Work, Counseling or related field and Certified Associate Counselor - Drug & Alcohol (CAC-AD) certification.
  • Certified as an alcohol and drug counselor by the Board of Professional Counselors and Therapists.
  • Bilingual English/Spanish, preferred.
  • Ability to work a varied schedule that may include evenings.
  • Ability to interact in a professional manner in both individual and group counseling settings.
  • Excellent oral and written communication skills.
  • Ability to effectively communicate with participants, other staff, and leadership personnel and react quickly and appropriately in an emergency situation.
  • Ability to work with computers and the necessary software typically used by the Department.
  • American Psychological Association's Standards for Educational and Psychological Testing.
