2025 Summer Intern - Department of Structural Biology

Department Summary

The CryoEM Group in the Department of Structural Biology is dedicated to providing high-resolution structural insights into biological macromolecules involved in health and disease. Our facility is equipped with two Krioses [Selectris X/Falcon4i], Glacios [K3], Talos 200C, a confocal microscope with cryo-stage, external access to FIB-milling equipment, and all the usual ancillary equipment.

This internship position is located in South San Francisco, on-site.

The Opportunity

You will help us answer interesting neurobiology-related questions using cryogenic electron tomography (cryoET). The project will be tailored to the skills and interests of the selected candidate. You will get a chance to be involved in all steps of the tomography workflow, from growing cells on EM grids, freezing, and FIB-milling (if required), to data collection and data processing.

Program Highlights

• Intensive 12-week, full-time (40 hours per week) paid internship.

• Program start dates are in May/June (Summer)

• A stipend, based on location, will be provided to help alleviate costs associated with the internship.

Who You Are (Required)

Required Education:

• Must be pursuing a PhD (enrolled student)

Required majors: Biochemistry, Biophysics, Molecular Biology, Structural Biology, or a related discipline.

Required skills:

• Basic experience with cryoEM sample preparation and data processing

• Basic biochemistry skills

Preferred Knowledge, Skills, and Qualifications

• CryoET specific experience (sample preparation, data collection, and tilt series processing).

• Experience with handling cell cultures.

• Excellent communication, collaboration, and interpersonal skills.

The expected salary range for this position based on the primary location of South San Francisco is $50.00 per hour. Actual pay will be determined based on experience, qualifications, geographic location, and other job-related factors permitted by law. This position also qualifies for paid holiday time off benefits. Relocation benefits are not available for this job posting.
