The Senior Director of ODT - Technology is a key member of the ODT Leadership team, directly reporting to the Head of Translational Medicine, ODT. This role provides scientific and strategic leadership, as well as operational oversight, for the evaluation, development, and deployment of routine and innovative biomarker technologies to accelerate clinical development and translational research goals in Translational Medicine (TM). The position oversees a department of approximately 20 individuals, with a span of control over 3-5 people leaders, supporting therapeutic molecules and translational research activities across the gRED and Product Development portfolio.

This role requires an individual with a borderless, portfolio-oriented mindset, exceptional communication, leadership abilities, as well as a talent for building relationships and strategic alignment with biomarker disease area leaders, internal and external technology experts, enterprise diagnostic partners, and other key internal stakeholders. The Senior Director will collaborate closely with leaders across gRED Research, Computational Sciences, and Development Sciences, as well as Product Development and Roche Diagnostics and Foundation Medicine delivering impactful technology solutions that significantly enhance therapeutic portfolio progression and translational research goals.

The ideal candidate will be an expert in biomarker assay and technology research and development, possess proficiency across various routine and advanced biomarker technology domains (e.g., liquid biopsy, digital pathology, proteomics, genomics, etc.), and be skilled at evaluating technology solutions for diverse scientific applications. They will have a deep understanding of clinical development and implementing biomarker technologies in clinical trials on clinical specimens. They will have the ability to balance competing priorities in a fast-paced and dynamic environment - in order to deliver robust technology solutions that meet key clinical development and translational research needs. They will serve as a key influencer and/or reviewer on internal governance committees, including the Translational Medicine Review Forum (TMRF), RRC and other relevant forums.

The Opportunity:

As an integral member of this dynamic team, you will be:

  • Collaborating with internal technology experts and TM subfunction leaders to co-create technology innovation strategies addressing high-priority clinical development and translational research objectives.
  • Overseeing the execution of technology innovation strategies, managing timelines, budgets, and the delivery of cross-functional, fit-for-purpose assays and platforms..
  • Refining and implement a resilient framework and operating model for technology evaluation, development, and deployment, adaptable to a dynamic technological and business environment.
  • Fostering collaboration with TM subfunctions and stakeholders across Roche-Genentech to facilitate efficient evaluation and knowledge sharing of emerging biomarker and diagnostics technologies.
  • Partnering seamlessly with internal gRED technology-focused organizations and departments as well as enterprise diagnostic partners to enable technology solutions in alignment with pharma portfolio and translational research goals.
  • Collaborating with external vendors, academic institutions, and industry consortia to support and advance internal technology strategy objectives.
  • Cultivating internal talent by providing opportunities for scientific, functional, and technical leadership, project management, and matrix leadership, equipping the team to meet current and future organizational needs.

Who You Are:

  • PhD, MD, or MD/PhD in a relevant field with extensive experience in biomarker assay and technology development
  • 10+ years of demonstrated leadership experience in academia, biotech, and/or pharma leading technology development projects, teams, and strategies for research and clinical development applications.
  • Proven experience managing external partnerships, project budgets, and timelines, with a track record of creative problem-solving.
  • Excellent communication, influence, and partnership skills within a matrixed environment.
  • Evidence of innovation, demonstrated through patents, publications, and product development.

Relocation Assistance is provided for this position

The expected salary range for this position based on the primary location of South San Francisco, California is $207,700-$385,000. Actual pay will be determined based on experience, qualifications, geographic location, and other job-related factors permitted by law. A discretionary annual bonus may be available based on individual and Company performance. This position also qualifies for the benefits detailed at the link provided below.
