Job Summary:

The UW Department of Soil and Environmental Sciences is seeking a Software Engineer/Developer II to work on multiple web and mobile applications used by the agricultural and conservation community throughout Wisconsin. Come join our team of researchers and software developers building and maintaining software tools used by thousands of farms in the state. Our tools help farms effectively manage crop nutrients in an economic and environmentally sustainable way.

The software developer's primary role will be working with the SnapPlus team (https://snapplus.wisc.edu) to build and maintain web and mobile applications for nutrient management planning. In addition, they will work closely with faculty and researchers to develop new applications related to active research and outreach topics in the department. This includes building a nitrogen management tool for corn in Wisconsin in collaboration with the Arriaga Lab. The educational tool's main goal is to help producers make informed decisions that reduce environmental nitrogen losses while maintaining productivity.

The role requires working closely with other team members and taking individual ownership of functional areas. Position responsibilities include high level technical design, implementing new functionality, improving the existing codebase, and providing user support.

Responsibilities:
Designs, develops, tests, debugs, operates, and troubleshoots software and applications to support information technology business operations.

  • 35% Reviews application design specifications, codes new applications, and makes enhancements to existing applications
  • 10% Tests and debugs programs, and prepares systems test data
  • 5% Prepares program documentation and training requirements
  • 10% Develops or modifies technical specifications for moderately-complex projects using disciplined software development practices
  • 20% Maintains and troubleshoots applications, systems, or websites
  • 5% Implements data structure and systems performance strategies
  • 15% Work collaboratively with a diverse customer base to provide creative solutions to unique user issues

Qualifications:

REQUIRED QUALIFICATIONS:
- Experience writing software in a modern high-level programming language (C#, Java, JavaScript, Python, etc.)
- Familiarity with software development practices such as version control, unit tests, and code reviews
- Demonstrated success communicating technical knowledge to a non-technical audience
- Demonstrated experience working independently and in close collaboration with others

PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS:
- Experience with relational databases and SQL
- Experience with JavaScript frameworks (Vue, React, Angular)
- Domain knowledge or professional experience related to agriculture, environmental science, environmental engineering, hydrology, or similar
- Experience working with spatial data and understanding of basic geographic information system (GIS) concepts


Work Type:

Full Time: 100%

This position may require some work to be performed in-person, onsite, at a designated campus work location. Some work may be performed remotely, at an offsite, non-campus work location.
