General Summary

The Chair of Pathology is responsible for clinical, administrative, and teaching activities for all pathology services and programs at Newton-Wellesley Hospital (NWH). Under the general direction of the President/Chief Operating Officer and in compliance with the Bylaws, Rules, and Regulations of the Medical Staff, the Chair of Pathology will oversee the following responsibilities:


Clinical Responsibilities

1. Pathology Services Management

a. Collaborate with Administration, Chairs, Chiefs of other departments, and other stakeholders to ensure the continuous availability of high-quality, state-of-the-art pathology services for NWH. The Chair will also work closely with Mass General Brigham Pathology leadership in integrating pathology services across the health care system.

2. Quality of Professional Performance

a. Ensure the clinical quality and professional performance of attending physicians, residents, and medical students in the Department of Pathology.

b. When benchmarks are not met, implement corrective action plans or proceed with disciplinary measures as outlined in the Medical Staff Bylaws.

3. Credentialing and Privileges

a. Recommend and supervise the granting of privileges for members of the Department of Pathology.

b. Propose candidates for Department membership and Medical Staff appointments and reappointments as per Medical Staff Bylaws.

c. Recruit high-quality pathologists in subspecialties appropriate to the hospital's scope of services.

4. Standards and Compliance

a. Work with Administration to ensure that departmental care meets internal standards as well as those of the College of American Pathologists, The Joint Commission, the Board of Registration in Medicine, the Department of Public Health, and other regulatory bodies.

5. Ancillary Services and Safety

a. Collaborate with Administration to ensure the quality, safety, and appropriateness of ancillary services and personnel associated with the Department of Pathology.

6. Clinical Practice Guidelines

a. Lead efforts to identify areas where clinical practice guidelines will enhance safety, effectiveness, and efficiency of care. Ensure timely development, implementation, and updates of these guidelines.

b. Promote multidisciplinary collaboration across MGB sites to provide a broad spectrum of pathology services for NWH patients.



Additional Administrative Responsibilities

1. Leadership in Safety, Quality, and Risk Management

a. Take a lead role in the Department's safety, quality, and risk management initiatives, including collaboration with the Mass General Brigham (MGB) Pathology Quality & Safety group.

2. Department Structure and Recruitment

a. As per Medical Staff Bylaws and Hospital policies, create Divisions within the Department of Pathology as needed and recruit Chiefs of Divisions to enhance care quality.

b. Ensure that all Medical Director positions within the Department are filled with high-quality pathologists.

3. Budgeting and Financial Planning

a. Collaborate with Administration on the preparation and implementation of the annual operating and capital budget for the Department, considering the broader MGB clinical laboratories budget.

b. Plan for long-term capital needs, including specialized clinical services, educational and research activities, and potential funds for community outreach, teaching, and public relations.

4. Committee Participation

a. Maintain membership on the Executive Committee of the Medical Staff (ECMS) and other committees as needed. Ensure implementation of pertinent recommendations from these committees.

5. Annual Reporting

a. Prepare an Annual Report for the ECMS detailing the Department's status, goals accomplished, and recommendations for improvement.

6. Departmental Meetings and Peer Review

a. Prepare agendas and preside over business and educational meetings for the Department.

b. Participate in peer review as per the quality and safety protocols of NWH, MGB, and Medical Staff Bylaws.

7. Departmental Representation

a. Annually review Departmental representation on NWH Hospital, MGB, and Medical Staff committees, and provide recommendations to the Associate Chief Medical Officer and the President of the Medical Staff.

8. MGB Pathology and System Integration

a. Actively engage in initiatives related to MGB Pathology and the system's mission of integrated care, including:

i. Coordinating laboratory activities between NWH and other MGB labs with technical laboratory leadership.

ii. Aligning faculty practice activities between NWH and other MGB sites, under the direction of the MGB Deputy Chief for Community Pathology.

iii. Collaborating with MGB Pathology leadership on setting compensation policies for NWH Pathology faculty employed by MGB.



Educational Responsibilities - Departmental, Programming, Teaching

1. Academic Appointment

a. Chair may be able to pursue an academic appointment consistent with the chair's qualifications.

2. Hospital Education Programs

a. Lead or participate in NWH's educational programs for physician trainees and medical staff, particularly those related to Pathology.

3. Training and Development

a. Support appropriate training in Pathology for staff physicians, residents, medical students, and pathology technologists.

4. Conference Participation

a. Arrange for Pathologists' participation in medical staff conferences as required.

5. Encouragement of Scholarly Activity

a. Promote scholarly activity among Department members.

2. Continuing Education

a. Ensure that all physicians in the Department of Pathology maintain continuing education requirements.

Qualifications

Qualifications:



  • Board-Certified pathologist with an M.D or D.O degree and a minimum of 10 years of clinical experience
  • Candidates must have a current MA licensure or be eligible for a MA Medical license without restriction
