This is a part-time position that will not exceed 20 hours per week. However, this position is eligible for overtime compensation for all hours worked over 40 in the designated workweek.

About Us

Are you ready to help your community prepare for a large-scale emergency and keep our County safe? We are looking for motivated individuals to rise to the occasion! Maricopa County Department of Emergency Management prepares for, responds to, and recovers from large-scale community disasters. Security Services is a division within the Emergency Management Department that provides specialized armed security services and executive protection to our County leaders and ensures the safety of County facilities and property. Some of our partners include local and state governments, industry leaders, universities, and community organizations active in disasters. One of our unique programs is Securing the Cities (STC), which is a preventative radiological and nuclear detection program that partners with law enforcement agencies and fire departments to enhance their radiation detection capabilities by providing equipment, training, and plan development support. Also, we are responsible for offsite planning for the Palo Verde Nuclear Generating Station. We Require

  • Completion of FEMA IS-100, IS-200 or the ability to complete within one month of the hire date

  • Graduate student or undergraduate senior currently enrolled in an Arizona-accredited university in Emergency Management or Public Administration

  • Able to work on-site at Papago Park and our new facility at 1325 N Fiesta Blvd in Gilbert in early 2025

  • Reliable transportation

  • ICS-300, ICS-400, IS-700, IS-800, IS-120.c, IS-230.d, IS-235.c, IS-240.b, IS-241.b, IS-242.b, IS-244.a, and IS-2200 or the ability to complete within one month of the hire date

Job Contributions

  • Assist Emergency Management Coordinators (EMCs) in developing emergency response plans and procedures

  • Assist EMCs in developing, planning, conducting, and evaluating emergency exercises for flood, wildland, and nuclear emergencies

  • Attend emergency management trainings and other formal educational classes regionally

  • Support community all-hazards education and public outreach to spread awareness of emergency preparedness topics

  • Assist in the implementation and management of the Securing the Cities program

  • Provide support to the Department's Radiological Emergency Preparedness Program, coordinating county response activities to an event at Palo Verde Generating Station

  • Participate in emergency response operations in the County Emergency Operations Center in exercises and real-world activations, if necessary

Working Conditions

This position will require you to be in the office and is not eligible for teleworking. Exerting 20-25 lbs. occasionally, 10-25 lbs. frequently, or up to 10 lbs. constantly. The position is typically office or administrative work and is not substantially exposed to adverse environmental conditions.
