We are looking for aPrincipal Advisor - Risk Management & Assuranceto join the Rio Tinto Kennecott Copper (RTKC) Process Safety Management (PSM) team. This team is responsible to ensure PSM hazards are identified and that effective controls are implemented and maintained.
Reporting to theManager - Process Safety, your responsibilities and accountabilities will include:
- Leading the delivery of risk management programs of work, including the development and maintenance of the PSM critical control management program and framework
- Coordinating analysis, and reporting of risk information for the RTKC business, and support communication of results
- Continuous improvement of systems and processes to support improved management of process safety related risks
- Managing the PHA schedule in collaboration with peers to ensure timely execution of activities to meet internal and external regulatory requirements
- Facilitating risk assessments and actively apply knowledge of assessment methodologies to advise the business on risk exposures and control measures to effectively manage identified risks
- Engage key stakeholders involved in hazards analysis, risk analysis and safety analysis (controls and mitigations) activities to proactively identify and mitigate identified risks
- Participating in and leading incident investigations (root cause and corrective action) as required
- Plan, execute and track internal assurance and governance activities
- Monitor compliance deficiencies and data trends and develop and deliver associated reporting systems
- Ensure identified non-conformance issues are tracked through to resolution through structured reporting and escalation processes
- Develop and deliver training to various levels of leadership and operational personnel, as required
- Participating in, and coordinating external audit and assurance activities as required
- Responsible for action tracking, metrics development, and metrics reporting on routine basis.
- Interfacing with, supporting, guiding, and influencing Operations, Technical, Asset Management, Projects & Engineering, and Health Safety & Environment teams to ensure peak process safety performance.
- Interfacing with relevant central teams (RT Copper Group and RT Centre of Excellence) to maximize their support for the Kennecott business.
- Administering key safety and risk management systems used across RTKC including BowTie XP and PHA Pro, and other licensed software and systems as required.
What you'll bring
To be successfully considered for this role, you must have:
- A minimum of a bachelor's degree in engineering, safety, or a related field. Advanced degrees in appropriate disciplines will be considered as will years of industrial experience.
- The ideal candidate will have 5 years (minimum) of experience in safety, risk management, or operations in industrial processing plants, heavy industry or mining operations.
- Thorough understanding of risk management principles and frameworks
- Ability to understand, explain, and analyze complex, inter-related operations, processing systems, control systems, and projects with respect to process safety hazards, controls strategies, and critical control development and maintenance.
- Hands on with a strong desire to understand how the plant functions.
- Ability to work in a team, and independently with minimal guidance.
- Ability to influence effectively.
- Strong stakeholder engagement skills and ability to influence outcomes across all organizational levels.
- Experience in root cause and corrective action investigations.
- Excellent written and verbal communication skills.
- Skills in statistical data analysis.
- Proficiency in common software packages.

Where you'll be working
Our Kennecott mine is a world-class, fully integrated copper mining operation, including a concentrator, smelter and refinery, located just outside Salt Lake City, Utah, in the United States. We produce copper, precious metals including gold and silver, molybdenum and sulfuric acid. Kennecott has been mining and processing minerals from the rich ore body of the Bingham Canyon Mine since 1903, and is one of the top producing mines in the world, comprising approximately 11 percent of U.S. annual copper production.
