Divisional Director of Field Development

Job Objective: Serve as a development consultant to Kansas and Western Missouri (KWM) Division Units (Corps and Corps Community Centers) outside of the area commands (Kansas City and South Central) with major giving, advisory boards, development planning and execution. Partners with Divisional Headquarters (DHQ) development team to carry out its fundraising strategies for Corps communities in the division.

Essential Functions:

Major Giving Program:



  • Assists all KWM Corps outside of the Kansas City Area Command and South Central Area Command with major giving development, capital campaign needs, by identifying the top 5-10% of donors in each Corps community, and tracking/reporting on these donors
  • Works with Corps officers and advisory board members on creating and organizing fundraising plans and strategies for upper-tier major donors, including individuals, corporations, and foundations
  • Works directly with selected funders, especially foundations, with permission from local Corps leadership
  • Assists with Corps Christmas activities; may include kettle strategy, recruitment of campaign chairs, committees and events.


Advisory Board Development:



  • Assists each Corps with advisory board development as a key component of the major giving strategic plan
  • Strong emphasis on coaching and advising Corps officers and staff with best practices to include developing strategic and effective advisory boards and committees
  • Serves as consultant for Area Command Corps advisory council's development, in partnership with Executive Director of Development and Sr. Development Director


Other Functions:



  • Partners with DHQ Planned Giving staff to identify planned giving prospects
  • Works with Donor Relations Directors (DRD), in markets served by DRDs, to coordinate major giving prospect lists, to assure DRD portfolios are managed primarily by DRDs
  • Partners with Divisional Director of Marketing & PR and Resource Development Manager to assist Corps with direct mail and digital fundraising programs
  • Supervises divisional grants writer and works with them to identify grant opportunities throughout the division
  • Identifies major donors and partners with whom KWM Leadership should meet with
  • Provides comprehensive and timely written reports for the Divisional Commander and Executive Director of Development after meeting with Corps leadership and advisory board members
  • Serves on Mission Leadership team
  • Performs other related duties as assigned by Executive Director of Development


Minimum Qualifications:

Education: Bachelor's degree in Business, Marketing, Communications or similar fields; minimum seven years' relevant management experience, preferably in the non-profit sector, may be considered in lieu of education

Experience:



  • Management experience, preferably in the non-profit sector
  • Governing and/or advisory board relations experience preferred
  • Minimum one year experience in non-profit strategic planning


Certifications/Licenses: None

Skill/Abilities:



  • Microsoft Office Suite, Customer Relationship Management software (Salesforce, Tableau) and the ability to access data systems via a web-based system
  • Administrative skills to include utilization of standard office equipment, data entry, and attention to details
  • Demonstrated ability to handle confidential matters with strong independent judgement
  • Ability to be flexible, prioritize and work on multiple projects or tasks simultaneously
  • Must embrace, support and reflect well on The Salvation Army's mission and values through one's professional responsibilities and behavior at all times
  • Effective interpersonal, conversational and presentation skills, demonstrating emotional intelligence, situational awareness, excellent writing abilities and strong case development and pitching skills
  • Able to work independently in a fast-paced environment without extensive admin support
  • Must be highly organized and able to effectively manage multiple projects and competing priorities with professionalism and grace
  • Able to maintain accurate and complete documentation
  • Demonstrated orientation to achieving goals, with a drive to achieve agreed upon goals within agreed upon timeframes
  • Proven expertise in developing and maintaining positive relationships with diverse individuals, including executives, leadership volunteers and wealthy donors, as well as internal stakeholders and leadership
  • The selected individual should enjoy problem solving, think strategically and creatively, and take initiative with good follow through
  • A high level of comfort with direct donor interaction is a must, including discussions of personal and family finances and asking for major financial commitments
  • Team player, able to check ego at the door, with an ability to collaborate effectively with officers, staff and volunteers for successful achievement of position and department goals
  • Willingness and ability to travel regularly


Supervisory Responsibility: Divisional Grants Manager

Physical Requirements: The position requires sitting; climbing and/or balancing; stooping, kneeling, bending, stretching, crouching and/or crawling; standing; walking; manual dexterity and eye-hand coordination; use of vision; driving a vehicle; pushing/pulling/lifting/carrying 25 pounds; traveling by airplane: both outdoor and indoor navigation of settings, and standing and/or walking up to 12 hours per day. Travel: Travel up to 50%

Driving: Driving is required. Must possess a valid driver's license from the state of residence. Must be approved through The Salvation Army Fleet Safety Program to drive either a Salvation Army or personal vehicle on Salvation Army business.

Working Conditions: Daily work is performed in a typical office environment; may require some weekend and evening work Event work may include hotels, indoor/outdoor venues, Corps Community Centers, and other public venues. This position will be required to work evenings, weekends and holidays as necessary to and attend events, conferences and meetings as directed.
