Minimum Qualifications

  • A professional registered nurse (RN) with a bachelor's degree in nursing from an accredited institution is required.
  • A minimum of two calendar years or the equivalent of full-time clinical experience as a registered nurse.
  • Strong medical-surgical background.
  • Excellent clinical and communication skills.

License/Certification Required
Current unrestricted and unencumbered RN license in North Carolina or compact state
Preferred Qualifications

  • Master's degree or higher in education, instructional technology, nursing or related field preferred. Prior post-secondary teaching, counseling, or advising experience is preferred.
  • Preparation in teaching and learning principles for adult education, student academic success coaching and evaluation and/or student mentoring.
  • Clinical expertise or education in multiple clinical areas is preferred, must have a strong medical/surgical background.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities
With approximately 560 enrolled students, the Department of Nursing prepares nurse leaders and providers to advance the nursing profession through education, scholarship and practice in service to the community. Programs include the pre-licensure BSN, the online RN to BSN, and the online MSN with a concentration in nursing education. All programs are fully accredited by the Commission on Collegiate Nursing Education ( CCNE). The Department is in the process of developing a new DNP Nurse Practitioner program to begin in fall of 2025.

The Nurse Academic Coach will help create positive learning environments for students in accordance with the educational objectives of the course/program and help to develop and implement learning improvement plans to facilitate educational progression, reduce attrition, and foster greater levels of personal responsibility and academic self-efficacy for undergraduate nursing students.
Duties and Responsibilities include:

  • Serves as a role model for professionalism and nursing excellence.
  • Coordinates and facilitates open lab sessions for reinforcement of skill attainment.
  • Is proficient at identifying and addressing barriers to student success and satisfaction on an individual basis.
  • Assists course faculty and students in creation and implementation of student learning improvement plans, maintaining records and confidentiality.
  • Coordinates with course faculty to create support services that follow best practices.
  • Provides information about college academic and personal resources as necessary.
  • Provides support and remediation for at-risk students and student performance issues.
  • Promotes optimal communication skill development in nursing students.
  • Evaluates and reports academic success trends.
  • Proactively develops and coordinates student group study sessions.
  • Provides general academic coaching on study skills, time management, and methods for improving academic performance.
  • Serves as a proctor for standardized testing, course testing makeups and test remediation with input from course faculty.
  • Maintains required competencies as determined by Appalachian State University, the Department of Nursing and North Carolina (or compact state) Board of Nursing.
